No. 1 pick Cam Ward plans to reward Titans' trust

Fri Apr 25 2:41pm ET
Field Level Media

After sleeping for only 90 minutes in the hours between hitting the stage as the No. 1 pick of the Tennessee Titans in the 2025 NFL Draft and sunrise in Green Bay, Cam Ward walked into the team complex with his eyes wide open on Friday morning.

"You have to be an elite communicator, that's what I learned being in college," Ward said. "I think that's why we were able to have one of the best offenses at Miami last year. Continuing to get better each year, in and out, and making sure we're always communicating.

"Being a teammate, being a real locker room guy, also holding people accountable. ... At the end of the day, it all starts on the practice field. Nothing translates to game day if you don't rep it over and over. I plan on getting to work."

Between an embrace with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and the lunchtime introductory press conference in Nashville on Friday, Ward had a celebration with his parents and "small circle" in Wisconsin and estimated he closed his eyes at 4 a.m. before a 5:30 wake-up call to appear on "Good Morning America." Ward was soon aboard "Miss Amy's" private jet -- the mode of transportation belonging to Titans principal owner Amy Adams Strunk -- for the dawning of his first day as a pro quarterback.

Make that, a franchise quarterback, a label not lost on Ward.

"Somebody who can lead their teammates for numerous amount of years, not just one season," Ward said. "You've got to be consistent in the National Football League. That's why you see some of the best quarterbacks out here, Pat (Mahomes), Josh (Allen) and Lamar (Jackson) in the playoffs every year. That's where I want to get to in my career, real fast."

Ward said he doesn't get enough credit for processing what he sees on the field and his feel for the pocket. He plans to prove the Titans made the right pick.

"That's all I really need, all I need is one shot, I'll make the most of it," Ward said. "For them to draft me No. 1 overall, I know they don't regret it. I'm going to make sure they don't."

College football's all-time leader in career passing touchdowns with 158, Ward played at FCS Incarnate Word, Washington State and Miami in five seasons. Preparation is a constant with Ward, whose coaches praised his eagerness to put in overtime watching film and fighting to get better.

"It's something that you do fall in love with," Ward said. "I really didn't start learning football until I got to Wazzu. As I progressed throughout my career, I started to love it even more. I just think over time I've gotten better, learned how to watch film the right way."

Ward was introduced by former Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon, who appeared in-person at the team headquarters to sign off on Ward wearing the jersey number 1.

"A lot of our journeys are similar about what we were told about not being good enough," Moon said. "As far as the number an everything is concerned. I wore the No. 1 for a lot of reasons and I wore it for a long time. ... I'm excited to see what he's going to do with his legacy and wearing this number."

Ward said he called Moon last month but didn't know the live presentation was going to take place. He said the player, not the person, makes the number, and he knows he will be judged by performance. He said he didn't know about Moon until February and began watching his highlights to make sure the Pro Football Hall of Famer was legit.

"He was," Ward said with a laugh.

George Pickens Apr 25 2:30pm CT
George Pickens

The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that the Pittsburgh Steelers have been receiving calls about the availability of wide receiver George Pickens, according to sources. The Steelers are open to conversations as they navigate the second round of this year's NFL draft. Pittsburgh gave away their second-round pick this year to acquire wideout DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks earlier this offseason. At No. 21 overall in the first round on Thursday night, the Steelers passed on a quarterback and running back to select Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon. They are now weighing their needs at QB and RB heading into the second round on Friday night against a potential trade of Pickens, who has displayed maturity issues in his time with the team. The Steelers are excited about the possibility of having a 1-2 punch of Metcalf and Pickens, but they might cave in if they're presented with a great offer.

Rico Dowdle Apr 25 2:10pm CT
Rico Dowdle

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said on 105.3 The Fan that the team doesn't necessarily have to draft a running back this year. "I like what we did in free agency. We don't really feel like we have to pick a position anywhere. We don't feel the need to have to reach," Jones said. Dallas let last year's starter, Rico Dowdle, walk in free agency while adding both Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders. A backfield led by Williams and Sanders in 2025 would be a step back for the Cowboys after a disappointing 2024 season that ended without a postseason appearance, so we would be surprised if Dallas didn't address their backfield in this year's draft, possibly in the second round on Friday night. They have one pick in Round 2 (44th overall) and one pick in Round 3 (76th overall), and there's a pretty good chance one of those will go to the RB position.

Will Levis Apr 25 11:40am CT
Will Levis

Now that the Tennessee Titans officially took Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday night, former second-round QB Will Levis could be traded soon after going 5-16 a a starter with more turnovers (26 interceptions and fumbles lost combined) than touchdown passes (21). General manager Ran Carthon, who traded up for Levis in 2023, has already been fired, and Levis was benched in 2024. The Titans have insisted that Levis will be given a chance to compete with Ward, but the Titans still lack a third-round pick in this year's draft, and trading Levis could get them back into that round. The 25-year-old's dynasty stock has already taken a big hit after he looked terrible as Tennessee's starter last year, and now with Ward in town, the best hope for his long-term value is a trade out of town.

Tetairoa McMillan Apr 25 11:30am CT
Tetairoa McMillan

Carolina Panthers rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan said that quarterback Bryce Young told head coach Dave Canales and general manager Dan Morgan that the team needed to draft him. Young vouched for McMillan, and the Panthers listed and selected the 22-year-old Arizona product with the eighth overall pick of the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday night. The 6-foot-4 pass-catcher excels on contested catches down the field and should immediately be a starter in three-wide sets for the team in 2025 next to Xavier Legette and veteran Adam Thielen. McMillan will give Young a wide catch radius, but there are questions about how much separation he will be able to get on a consistent basis at the next level. If it's true that Young was adamant about the team drafting McMillan, the two could quickly form a strong connection that helps McMillan become fantasy relevant in Year 1.

Travis Hunter Apr 25 11:20am CT
Travis Hunter

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero says that the Jacksonville Jaguars plan to have rookie two-way star Travis Hunter start out in their wide receivers room, but they also plan to have him meet with the defensive backs and practice on the defensive side of the ball. Jacksonville pulled off a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Browns (that included a first-round pick in 2026) to move up to second overall on Thursday night to take the 21-year-old Heisman Trophy winner. The Jags are looking to make a splash under first-year general manager James Gladstone and head coach Liam Coen, and Hunter should help them do that. First and foremost, they want Hunter to work on offense as they look to help quarterback Trevor Lawrence rebound from a disappointing and injury-plagued 2024. It's unclear how big of a role Hunter will have on offense initially, but this is an early good sign for his rookie fantasy value.

Jameson Williams Apr 25 11:10am CT
Jameson Williams

The Detroit Lions exercised wide receiver Jameson Williams' fifth-year option for the 2026 season on Friday, a source tells ESPN's Field Yates. This was a no-brainer move for the Lions after Williams broke out with his first 1,000-yard receiving season in 2024. The 24-year-old former first-rounder out of Ohio State is projected to make $15.49 million in 2026 on his fifth-year option. Williams played in only 18 games (10 starts) in his first two years in the NFL due to recovery from a torn ACL in his final year in college and a suspension for gambling last year. In 15 games (11 starts) during the regular season a year ago, he caught 58 of 91 targets for 1,001 yards and seven touchdowns. He also added 11 carries for 61 yards and a TD. Williams has big-play ability every time he touches the ball, but his lack of volume in a loaded Detroit offense is worrisome and makes him a boom-or-bust fantasy commodity.

Aidan Hutchinson Apr 25 11:10am CT
Aidan Hutchinson

The Detroit Lions exercised defensive end Aidan Hutchinson's (leg) fifth-year option for the 2026 season on Friday, a source told ESPN's Field Yates. This was the expected move, even though Hutchinson only played in five games in 2024 in his third year in the league due to a fractured tibia and fibula in his left leg. The 24-year-old was a first-time Pro Bowler in 2023 and finished second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting back in 2022. Hutchinson has proven to be one of the best young pass-rushers in the NFL and has recorded 28.5 sacks in his first 39 starts for the Lions. He posted a video of himself sprinting at the team's facilities back in February, so barring a setback this offseason, he should be ready to go for Week 1 of the 2025 regular season this fall. If Hutchinson is all systems go, he should be one of the first defensive linemen off the board in IDP fantasy drafts.

Luther Burden III Apr 25 7:36am CT
Luther Burden III

Dynasty | Missouri wide receiver Luther Burden was not selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Dynasty Analysis: Burden saw Travis Hunter, Tetairoa McMillan, Matthew Golden and Emeka Egbuka all get their names called on the first night but didn't have his own phone ring. He should find a team in short order but the fact he fell out of the first round solidifies the idea NFL Scouts believe his massive drop-off in production this season wasn't entirely the fault of his quarterback or a poor offense. The longer Burden goes without a home, the more risk dynasty managers are going to have using a rookie pick for his services.

Malaki Starks Apr 25 7:35am CT
Malaki Starks

The Baltimore Ravens selected Georgia defensive back Malaki Starks with the No. 27 overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday night. Starks will play center field at the safety position for Baltimore, a big position of need for the Ravens entering this year's draft. He has a very high football character and IQ and was named as a second-team All SEC player while leading the Bulldogs with 77 tackles and started all 14 games in 2024. Starks was a three-year starter for Georgia and plenty of size, athleticism, speed and ball skills to excel right away next to Kyle Hamilton in Baltimore's secondary. He doesn't play much near the line of scrimmage, but Starks should be a starter for the Ravens sooner than later. Starks has played much better in zone defense than when he's asked to cover receivers in man-to-man coverage.

Omarion Hampton Apr 25 7:35am CT
Omarion Hampton

Dynasty | The Los Angeles Chargers drafted running back Omarion Hampton with the 22nd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Dynasty Analysis: After the Broncos and Steelers both passed on Hampton, he fell right into the lap of the Chargers towards the end of round one. They certainly won't complain as Hampton should form a solid running back committee with newly signed Najee Harris. While many dynasty managers may be slamming their hands on the table because they wanted to see Hampton drafted in a more desirable place for short-term production, one only needs to look at the contract of Harris and realize Hampton is a year away from possible bellcow status. Savvy dynasty managers should look at this as a solid spot and Hampton looks like a top-3 pick in dynasty leagues moving forward.

Matthew Golden Apr 25 7:35am CT
Matthew Golden

Dynasty | The Green Bay Packers drafted Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden with the 23rd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Dynasty Analysis: And with that, the streak is over as the Packers hadn't taken a wide receiver in round one since 2002. Golden slots in with the likes of Romeo Doubs, Christian Watson, Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks in what looks to be a pretty crowded room of good wide receivers. The difference is Golden has a chance to be great and we haven't really seen that consistently from any of the others on the roster. Golden slid a little in the draft but ended up landing in a good spot from a dynasty standpoint. Golden was a top-10 pick in the pre-draft process and he'll likely stay in that range post-draft.

Emeka Egbuka Apr 25 4:13am CT
Emeka Egbuka

Dynasty | The Tampa Bay Bucs drafted wide receiver Emeka Egbuka with the 19th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Dynasty Analysis: Widely regarded as one of the safest draft picks based on his character, work ethic and leadership ability, Egbuka lands in Tampa Bay, where he'll learn behind Chris Godwin and Mike Evans. Dynasty managers are going to have to play the long game with Egbuka as he's going to likely be a situational player for Tampa Bay early on in his career, but his long-term potential is evident. Egbuka is a high floor player who may take a few years to really blossom, but he's clearly still worthy of a premium rookie pick.

Kirk Cousins Apr 25 4:13am CT
Kirk Cousins

Dynasty | Kirk Cousins was not traded during the first day of the NFL Draft. Dynasty Analysis: As expected, Cousins didn't waive his no-trade clause in order to be dealt on the draft's opening night. However, it now gets a little more interesting as teams that missed out on a quarterback (Cleveland, Pittsburgh) could be more aggressive in their pursuit of him and Cousins may now be willing to waive his no-trade clause to go to a team that doesn't have a young quarterback to replace him on the roster and little to no chance to really draft his future replacement.

Shedeur Sanders Apr 25 4:13am CT
Shedeur Sanders

Dynasty | Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders was not drafted in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Dynasty Analysis: The rumors of a draft freefall for Sanders ended up coming true as he waited to hear his name called all Thursday night only to see it never happen. It's clear there are some real concerns about Sanders and it's hard to look at his talent and believe those are all on-the-field issues teams are leery of. He should go early in round two, but this could be a bit of a humbling experience for Sanders, who was the odds-on favorite to go first overall just a few months ago. He could still surpass Jaxson Dart as the QB2 in the class, but he'll need to be taken relatively soon for that to happen.

Russell Wilson Apr 25 4:13am CT
Russell Wilson

Dynasty | Giants Head Coach Brian Daboll is planning on having Russell Wilson being his opening day starter. Dynasty Analysis: This is, of course, despite the fact the Giants moved up in the 2025 NFL Draft to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart in the first round. It all sounds great to have Dart sit behind Wilson and learn, but Daboll is also on one of the hottest seats in the NFL, so the leash on Wilson would be quite short. Regardless, Dart should find his way onto the field one way or another next year and it really looks like Wilson may need another trade at some point to get one last shot at sustained dynasty relevance. Wilson is a shaky hold in dynasty leagues.

Jameson Williams Apr 24 11:30pm CT
Jameson Williams

Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes said the team never entertained a trade of wide receiver Jameson Williams during the first round of the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday night. Not only did Detroit not trade the 24-year-old Ohio State alum, but they stayed in the No. 28 overall spot in the first round on Thursday and took defensive tackle Tyleik Williams out of Ohio State. Williams is heading into the final year of his rookie deal in 2025, but the Lions are expected to pick up his fifth-year option for the 2026 season by the deadline on May 1. In his third year in the NFL, Williams broke out to the tune of a 58-1,001-7 line on 58 receptions in 15 regular-season games (11 starts). It could be tough for the former first-rounder to top that production in 2025 with offensive coordinator Ben Johnson gone, making Williams a boom/bust fantasy target as a home run threat whenever he touches the football.

Kayvon Thibodeaux Apr 24 11:20pm CT
Kayvon Thibodeaux

The New York Giants are planning on picking up defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux's fifth-year option for the 2026 season, according to general manager Joe Schoen. "Kayvon is going to be here. You can't have enough pass rushers," Schoen said. The 24-year-old former fifth overall pick in 2022 out of Oregon missed five games last year due to a wrist injury and finished with a career-low 28 tackles (14 solo), 5.5 sacks, eight tackles for loss, 17 QB hits and a forced fumbles in 12 starts for the G-Men. Although production-wise he took a step back in 2024 in his third NFL seasons, Thibodeaux is expected to be a key member of the team's pass rush again in 2025, and the Giants gave him a lot of help by taking Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter third overall in the first round of this year's draft on Thursday. In addition to Thibodeaux and Carter, the Giants have Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence who can get after the passer.

Jaxson Dart Apr 24 11:13pm CT
Jaxson Dart

Dynasty | The New York Giants trade back into the first round to select Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart at No. 25. Dynasty Analysis: Immediately after the pick, head coach Brian Daboll was quoted saying, "Russ will be our starter in the spring as they get started." Which is sort of like naming Wilson the starter, but we have a long way to go. In Dynasty value, Winston can be safely dropped in all but the very deepest of SuperFlex leagues, while Wilson's value will continue to stagnate in the QB32 range.

Patrick Mahomes Apr 24 11:10pm CT
Patrick Mahomes

The Kansas City Chiefs dropped back one spot via a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles at the back end of the first round and took Ohio State offensive tackle with the 32nd overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday night. Simmons could end up being an excellent value pick for the Chiefs with the last pick of this year's first round. The 22-year-old offensive lineman fell to the end of the first round due to a torn ACL that he suffered in the sixth game last year for the Buckeyes. Although Simmons might not be ready to play for most of his rookie season in 2025, he now projects at KC's long-term offensive tackle to protect quarterback Patrick Mahomes' blind side. While Simmons recovers from his knee injury, expect Jaylon Moore, who the Chiefs signed this offseason, to start at left tackle. It's not a surprise the Chiefs addressed their O-line early in this year's draft after protection was a big issue in their Super Bowl loss.

Russell Wilson Apr 24 11:10pm CT
Russell Wilson

After trading up back into the first round of the 2025 NFL draft on Thursday night to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll made it clear in his press conference that veteran Russell Wilson will be the starting QB, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. "He can come in, sit behind a couple veteran quarterbacks and learn," Daboll said. In addition to Wilson, the G-Men signed former first-rounder Jameis Winston to bolster their QB room heading into 2025. Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen are both firmly on the hot seat, but at least the Giants now have their QB of the future if things go poorly again this fall. Wilson, 36, initially gave Pittsburgh's offense a spark in 2024 but looked over the hill down the stretch. He could develop a nice chemistry with WR1 Malik Nabers, but Wilson will have to play well to hold off Winston and Dart.
