Antonio Gates among four elected to Pro Football Hall of Fame

Field Level Media

NEW ORLEANS -- Antonio Gates, who went from being an undrafted player to one of the most prolific pass-catching tight ends in NFL history, was among four selections to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Thursday night.

The former San Diego/Los Angeles Charger, who was a two-time finalist, was joined by former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Eric Allen, former Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen and former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Sterling Sharpe in the Class of 2025.

The class was revealed during the NFL Honors ahead of Super Bowl LIX on Sunday.

Gates was a basketball player at Kent State and went on to play 16 seasons (2003-18) with the Chargers.

He was an eight-time Pro Bowl selection and caught 116 touchdown passes, the most by a tight end and No. 7 all time among all receivers. His 955 career receptions are fourth among tight ends and he had 21 career multi-touchdown games, the most by any tight end, and was named to the NFL's All-Decade Team for the 2000s.

Eric Allen was a two-time finalist who played 14 seasons (1988-94 Philadelphia Eagles, 1995-97 New Orleans Saints, 1998-2001 Oakland Raiders). The six-time Pro Bowler from Arizona State finished with 54 career interceptions, which is tied for No. 21 all time. He returned eight interceptions for touchdowns, tied for eighth in NFL history.

Jared Allen was a five-time finalist who played 12 seasons (2004-07 Kansas City Chiefs, 2008-2013 Minnesota Vikings, 2014-15 Chicago Bears, 2015 Carolina Panthers). The four-time All-Pro, who entered the league as a fourth-round draft pick from Idaho State, had 136 sacks.

Sharpe, who was selected No. 7 in the first round out of South Carolina in the 1988 draft, was a three-time first-team All-Pro and a five-time Pro Bowler during his seven-year career with the Packers. He set what was then an NFL record with 108 receptions in 1992 and topped that with 112 the next season. He was forced to retire because of a neck injury.

He joins his younger brother, former Broncos and Baltimore Ravens tight end Shannon Sharpe, to form the only pair of brothers in the Hall.

Sterling Sharpe was one of three senior finalists along with Maxie Baughan and Jim Tyrer. Two other nominees were Super Bowl-winning coach Mike Holmgren and contributor Ralph Hay.

None of the six first-time nominees -- quarterback Eli Manning, defensive end Terrell Suggs, wide receiver Steve Smith Sr., linebacker Luke Kuechly, kicker Adam Vinatieri and offensive lineman Marshal Yanda -- was selected.

Other finalists were safety Darren Woodson, wide receiver Reggie Wayne, offensive linemen Willie Anderson and Jahri Evans, and running back Fred Taylor.

The Hall of Fame Selection Committee could have elected up to five players from 15 finalists from the modern era and could have picked as many as eight people from all of the groups of finalists.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame's induction ceremony is expected to take place during the first week of August in Canton, Ohio. The ceremony will be part of an Enshrinement Week that also is set to include the annual preseason Hall of Fame Game and the Enshrinees' Gold Jacket Dinner.

Deebo Samuel Feb 10 6:20pm ET
Deebo Samuel

The San Francisco 49ers gave wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. permission to seek a trade this offseason. Samuel is under contract for one more season, and his deal includes a $15 million option bonus. Along with his drop in production in 2024, it could suppress Samuel's trade market, but NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco lists the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Chargers, Washington Commanders, Pittsburgh Steelers and Houston Texans as a few teams that could be interested in acquiring Samuel from the Niners. The 29-year-old former second-rounder had career-lows of 3.4 catches and 44.7 receiving yards per game in 15 contests in 2024, with his per-rush average also dropping to 3.2 yards. Although Samuel is much more of an injury risk with declining production, he does have 42 total TDs in six NFL seasons and will draw interest from receiver-needy teams as a trade target.

DeAndre Hopkins Feb 10 2:10pm ET
DeAndre Hopkins

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins caught two passes for 18 yards and a touchdown in the 22-40 Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The 32-year-old made his Super Bowl debut in his 13th season in the league. Despite finding the end zone, Hopkins did not do much to impress in this contest. The Eagles defense suffocated the Chiefs offense, holding them to 23 total yards in the first half. The veteran receiver also caught a two-point conversion after the game's final touchdown. Hopkins finished third on the team in targets and receiving yards, behind Xavier Worthy and Travis Kelce. Hopkins was acquired by the team at the trade deadline and will be a free agent this offseason. It remains to be seen where Hopkins will land, but he demonstrated his ability to be a reliable WR2/3 on a competing team.

Travis Kelce Feb 10 2:00pm ET
Travis Kelce

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce caught four passes for 39 yards in the 22-40 Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The 35-year-old needed two touchdowns to tie Jerry Rice's playoff touchdown record, but failed to catch any in his last two games. The Eagles defense swarmed Patrick Mahomes on nearly every drop back, making it challenging to execute the passing game. Kelce was targeted six times, second on the team behind Xavier Worthy. The veteran tight end was unable to make a considerable difference in the game and his future in the league is uncertain after this loss. Kelce is a three-time Super Bowl champion and has a case to be the greatest tight end in NFL history. Whether he decides to return next season or not, Kelce is destined for the Hall of Fame.

Xavier Worthy Feb 10 1:50pm ET
Xavier Worthy

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy caught eight passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns in the 22-40 Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Worthy was the lone bright spot for Kansas City in this contest, catching multiple 50-yard passes from Mahomes. The 21-year-old showed off his speed on the game's final touchdown, beating two safeties to the end zone for a 50-yard score. The speedy rookie led the team in catches, receiving yards, and targets. Worthy took center stage with Travis Kelce underperforming in this contest. Worthy put together one of the best Super Bowl performances by a rookie, but most of his production came well after this game was out of hand. Despite suffering this huge loss, Worthy showed that he can perform at the highest level and should be poised for more growth next season.

Patrick Mahomes Feb 10 1:40pm ET
Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 21 of 32 pass attempts (66%) for 257 yards and three touchdowns in the 22-40 Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Mahomes missed out on achieving the first three-peat in NFL history and picked up his second Super Bowl loss in five appearances. The veteran quarterback ended with a solid statistical performance, but the box score does not tell the story of this game. Mahomes threw two interceptions in the first half of the game, one being returned for a pick-six. The Chiefs offense only had 23 total yards and one first down by the time the game reached halftime. The 29-year-old was also constantly under pressure from the Eagles front four. Mahomes was sacked six times, one leading to a lost fumble. The Chiefs scored their first points of the game with 34 seconds left in the third quarter. With two more garbage time touchdowns in the fourth quarter, Mahomes scored three times in the blowout loss. With the future of Travis Kelce uncertain following this huge loss, it remains to be seen what the Chiefs will look like next season. Despite the uncertainty, the Mahomes and the Chiefs have the talent and coaching staff to stay relevant for years.

Chris Jones Feb 10 1:00pm ET
Chris Jones

Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones (knee) injured his right knee in the 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday and never returned after getting a doubtful tag. Jones' injury didn't look too serious, but with the game essentially already over in the second half at the time of his injury, the Chiefs didn't feel it was necessary to risk further damage by bringing him back. Before hurting his knee, the 30-year-old pass-rusher was seen getting his neck worked on by trainers on the sidelines, but he was able to return to the game. It was a very disappointing performance by Jones and the entire Chiefs defense against an elite Philadelphia offensive line. Jones didn't record any tackles or sacks before injuring his knee in the second half and had only one QB hit.

Micah Parsons Feb 10 12:30pm ET
Micah Parsons

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the Dallas Cowboys are internally discussing whether to trade All-Pro pass-rusher Micah Parsons or to sign him to a monster contract extension this offseason that would surely make him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL. Executive vice president Stephen Jones expressed hesitation earlier this year about tying up a large chunk of the team's money in one player, but the Cowboys haven't made any final decisions on their plan with Parsons this offseason. Despite missing four games in 2024 due to an ankle injury, the 25-year-old managed to record 12 sacks in 13 games played, marking the fourth straight season he's had at least 12 sacks for the Cowboys. He's heading into the final year of his rookie contract. If Dallas chooses to trade Parsons, there will be no shortage of suitors.

J.J. McCarthy Feb 10 12:20pm ET
J.J. McCarthy

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports that Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy (knee), who missed all of his rookie year in the NFL after having knee surgery for a torn right meniscus, is expected to be ready for organized team activities this spring. He should be able to return to football activities in the next couple of weeks. However, the Vikings are still considering all of their options with impending free-agent QB Sam Darnold, who had a career year in Minnesota on a one-year deal in 2024. If Minnesota doesn't re-sign Darnold by March 4, they could place a franchise tag on him, which could allow McCarthy to develop for one more year behind Darnold. The Vikings also still have former Giants QB Daniel Jones, so if Darnold leaves in free agency, Jones would be an insurance policy in case the team doesn't feel McCarthy is ready to start early in the 2025 season.

Derrick Henry Feb 10 12:20pm ET
Derrick Henry

According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Baltimore Ravens and running back Derrick Henry are expected to start contract-extension talks early this offseason. Henry made $11 million in his first year with the Ravens in 2024 and is scheduled to make $7 million in his second year with the team in 2025. The 31-year-old King Henry proved this year that he still has plenty left in the tank and he recently told The Athletic that he would like to retire with the Ravens. Henry finished the 2024 campaign with 1,921 rushing yards -- the second-highest total of his career -- and a league-high 16 rushing touchdowns in 17 regular-season games to earn his fifth Pro Bowl selection. Despite the fact that Henry has a ton of tread on his tires and is an offense with quarterback Lamar Jackson, he will remain a high-end RB1 target in fantasy this fall.

From RotoBaller

Dallas Goedert Feb 10 12:50am ET
Dallas Goedert

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert caught each of his two targets for a total of 27 yards during Sunday's Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The veteran receiver struggled to overcome competition for touches in 2024, losing key opportunities to players like Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith. In fact, he wasn't even targeted in the second half of Sunday's big game. (One potential explanation is that the Eagles went run-heavy for most of the third and fourth quarters to drain the clock.) All in all, Goedert still has mid-range TE1 fantasy upside, but his floor dips significantly into the TE2 tier. As a result, we view him as a fringe top-12 fantasy tight end option heading into the 2025 season.

From RotoBaller

Jake Elliott Feb 10 12:50am ET
Jake Elliott

Philadelphia Eagles kicker Jake Elliott went 4-for-4 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra points during Sunday's Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Although Elliott was very shaky from beyond 50 yards during the regular season, he seemed to have no trouble with distance this Sunday, converting from 29, 48, 48, and 50 yards out. Furthermore, most of his attempts went straight down the middle and had plenty of distance to spare. Those who stuck with Elliott through his 2024 woes were brave souls, and the investment paid off with Elliott's busy night on Sunday.

From RotoBaller

DeVonta Smith Feb 10 12:40am ET
DeVonta Smith

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith caught four of his five targets for 69 yards and one touchdown during Sunday's Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The 26-year-old epitomized consistency over the last month, catching exactly four passes in each of his four playoff games. At times, Smith has looked more productive than A.J. Brown, and he got the edge over his teammate on Sunday by pacing all Eagles receivers in catches and yards. Although Smith himself had some inconsistent moments throughout the regular season, there is no denying that he is a talented player in an incredibly potent offense. Even as he loses some opportunities to Brown, Saquon Barkley, and Jalen Hurts, there is clearly a path for Smith to finish as a mid-range WR2 in 2025 fantasy football.

From RotoBaller

A.J. Brown Feb 10 12:40am ET
A.J. Brown

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown caught three of his five targets for 43 yards during Sunday's Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Brown had a quieter start to the playoffs, but he eventually came on strong with nine catches, 139 yards, and two touchdowns over his final two contests. The 27-year-old has shown an ability to produce in a crowded offense, compiling 1,079 yards and seven touchdowns in the regular season despite fighting to earn opportunities over stars like Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith, and Dallas Goedert. There are certainly many mouths to feed in Philadelphia, but Brown has shown that he can be the primary receiving option en route to ranking as a strong WR1 for fantasy purposes.

From RotoBaller

Saquon Barkley Feb 10 12:30am ET
Saquon Barkley

Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley rushed for 57 yards on 25 carries during Sunday's Super Bowl LIX win over the Kansas City Chiefs. He also caught six of his seven targets for an additional 40 yards through the air. Barkley had a rare quiet game on the ground, averaging just 2.3 yards per carry despite handling heavy volume. He did boost his per-touch average with some solid receiving work, including an impressive catch down the right sideline. All in all, even though this certainly wasn't Barkley's best game, it may have been one of his most memorable. The Eagles toppled the Chiefs on the national stage, securing a Super Bowl title and ending Kansas City's run at a three-peat. The victory was a rewarding end to a phenomenal season for Barkley, who bet on himself by leaving the Giants to sign with Philadelphia, where he ultimately won Offensive Player of the Year. As long as Barkley stays healthy throughout the offseason, he should be the consensus 1.01 in 2025 fantasy football drafts.

From RotoBaller

Jalen Hurts Feb 10 12:30am ET
Jalen Hurts

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts completed 17 of 22 pass attempts for 221 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception during Sunday's Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. He also took two sacks, rushed for 71 yards, and added another touchdown on the ground. Hurts led five scoring drives before the Chiefs even scored their first point, and he did more than enough to win Super Bowl MVP. The 26-year-old continued to impress on a national stage, delivering numerous strikes on the money, including a gorgeous 46-yard touchdown pass to DeVonta Smith that gave the Eagles a 34-0 lead. Hurts should be viewed as a top-three fantasy quarterback heading into the 2025 campaign, and he could make a case for QB1 overall.

Patrick Mahomes Feb 10 12:13am ET
Patrick Mahomes

Dynasty | Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes completed 21-of-32 passes 257 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions in a Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. Dynasty Analysis: The game line actually looks a lot better than it was as Mahomes picked up a lot of empty yards and scores after the game was out of hand. Under siege from the first snap, Mahomes really didn't have a chance as he was sacked six times on the night. The Chiefs will likely still employ a bit of a conservative offense next year, but Mahomes should still be good enough to be a QB1 on the season, just nowhere near his early-career self.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Xavier Worthy Feb 10 12:13am ET
Xavier Worthy

Dynasty | Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy had eight catches for 157 yards and two touchdowins in a Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. Dynasty Analysis: Worthy led the team in catches, targets, yards and touchdowns on the day. While some of his production came in garbage time, his usage rate really spiked towards the end of the year and his dynasty ADP is clearly on the rise. Worthy looks like a player with a lot of runway to grow in dynasty leagues and could be even better should Travis Kelce decide to retire.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Saquon Barkley Feb 10 12:13am ET
Saquon Barkley

Dynasty | Eagles running back Saquon Barkley had 57 rushing yards, six catches and 40 receiving yards in a Super Bowl win over the Chiefs. Dynasty Analysis: Barkley struggled to run against a Chiefs defense that sold out to stop him. However, you won't see him complain as the Chiefs picked their poison and got stung by his supporting cast. Barkley is the most talented and productive running back in the league and should be in line to be the overall RB1 again next season. While his dynasty value is capped by his age, few players can win you weeks like he can.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Jalen Hurts Feb 10 12:13am ET
Jalen Hurts

Dynasty | Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts completed 17-of-22 passes for 221 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception, while adding 72 rushing yards and another score en route to being named this year's Super Bowl MVP. Dynasty Analysis: The Eagles led 34-0 before Kansas City was on the board in a game that was essentially over at halftime. Give Hurts a ton of credit as the dual threat quarterback just had his way against a tough Chiefs defense. While Kansas City focused on stopping Saquon Barkley, Hurts made them pay dearly through the air and on the ground. With this on his mantle, Hurts will return next season as an elite QB1 in dynasty leagues.
