49ers QB Mac Jones gives update after re-aggravating knee injury

Sun Sep 21 10:02pm ET
Field Level Media

San Francisco quarterback Mac Jones re-aggravated a sprained PCL during the 49ers' 16-15 victory over the Arizona Cardinals, he told reporters after the game Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif.

Jones, 27, sustained the ligament injury in training camp but was healthy in time for the regular season, when he was the backup to starter Brock Purdy. However, Purdy came away from the season-opening win against the Seattle Seahawks with toe and left shoulder injuries, his toe being the bigger concern. He has missed the last two games, both San Francisco victories with Jones behind center.

Jones completed 27 of 41 passes for 284 yards, one touchdown and one interception against Arizona (2-1). He was 26-of-39 passing for 279 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 26-21 win at New Orleans on Sept. 14.

Purdy was listed as questionable for Sunday before being ruled out before the game.

The New England Patriots selected Jones with the 15th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft. Jones is in his first season as San Francisco's backup after three bumpy years in New England and one season in Jacksonville.

Puka Nacua Sep 21 10:00pm CT
Puka Nacua

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua was a busy man in Sunday's 33-26 Week 3 loss on the road to the Philadelphia Eagles. Nacua didn't find the end zone, but he was by far quarterback Matthew Stafford's favorite target, catching a team-high 11 passes for a team-high 112 yards on a team-high 15 targets. He also added six rushing yards on one carry. No other Rams pass-catcher was targeted more than eight times or caught more than three passes. Fantasy managers who may have been worried about Nacua's target share after the addition of Davane Adams can breathe easy, as he's been one of the most targeted receivers in the league through three weeks while topping 100 scrimmage yards in all three contests. Nacua and the Rams are heading into a Week 4 showdown with the 3-0 Indianapolis Colts. He needs to remain locked into all fantasy lineups as a high-volume WR1.

Kenneth Walker III Sep 21 9:50pm CT
Kenneth Walker III

Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III entered a great Week 3 matchup against the visiting New Orleans Saints with a higher fantasy ceiling after backfield mate Zach Charbonnet (foot) was ruled out. Walker took advantage with 16 carries and two touchdowns on the ground, but he wasn't very efficient with just 38 rushing yards (2.4 yards per carry). The 24-year-old added one catch on his only target for a 12-yard gain. Fantasy managers have to be pleased with Walker's production the last two weeks, as he's gone for 143 rushing yards and three touchdowns since a quiet Week 1 showing. Seattle took their foot off the gas in the second half on Sunday after quickly building a large first-half lead, as backup George Holani also reached double-digit carries (10). Walker is going to need to be more efficient when Charbonnet comes back to return RB2 value in fantasy, but Charb may miss another week with Seattle's Week 4 game coming next Thursday against the division-rival Arizona Cardinals.

Christian McCaffrey Sep 21 9:30pm CT
Christian McCaffrey

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey continues to be a high-volume workhorse for the Niners early in the 2025 season. In the one-point win over the visiting Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 on Sunday, McCaffrey had 17 rushing attempts for 52 yards and caught 10 of his 15 targets for 88 yards through the air. CMC was unable to find the end zone, but his workhorse role and good health (so far) have been music to his fantasy managers' ears. The Niners have been leaning on the 29-year-old with quarterback Brock Purdy (toe, shoulder), tight end George Kittle (hamstring), and receiver Jauan Jennings (ankle, shoulder) injured. He has exceeded 100 scrimmage yards in all three games so far this year and will have a good chance to make it four in a row in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars, especially if Purdy can return. CMC still has league-winning dual-threat abilities, but he'll need to stay healthy.

Baker Mayfield Sep 21 9:30pm CT
Baker Mayfield

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield wasn't outstanding on Sunday in Week 3 against the visiting New York Jets, but he did enough to lead the team to a 3-0 start in 2025. Mayfield went 19-for-29 passing for 233 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions in the 29-27 win. He added four carries for 44 rushing yards and was sacked once for a loss of eight yards. The 30-year-old's touchdown pass was a five-yard strike to veteran receiver Mike Evans (hamstring) in the second quarter. Mayfield could be getting Chris Godwin (ankle) back in Week 4 against the 3-0 Philadelphia Eagles, but he could be without Evans, who injured his hamstring in the second half and did not return. He has thrown six touchdowns and no interceptions through three weeks and will remain a decent QB streamer in fantasy, but next week won't be an ideal matchup against Philly.

Garrett Wilson Sep 21 9:20pm CT
Garrett Wilson

Fantasy managers may have been worried that New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson would be quiet in Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor leading the offense with Justin Fields out with a concussion. Wilson eased fantasy managers' minds by catching 10 of his 13 targets for 84 yards and his second touchdown of the year in a 29-27 loss at Raymond James Stadium. The 25-year-old led the Jets in all receiving categories in this one by a wide margin, with no other pass-catcher seeing more than six targets or catching more than four passes. Wilson's touchdown hookup with Taylor was an 11-yard reception in the fourth quarter. Even though the Jets are 0-3 early on, Wilson remains a must-start in fantasy lineups heading into a Week 4 matchup against the winless Miami Dolphins. Wilson has 21 catches for 229 yards and two scores through three weeks.

A.J. Brown Sep 21 9:10pm CT
A.J. Brown

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown dominated the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3, hauling in six of his 10 targets for 109 yards and a touchdown in Philadelphia's 33-26 win. Brown had been off to a very slow start to his 2025 season coming into Week 3, recording just six catches for 35 yards across the Eagles' first two games. The main reason for his lack of production was Philadelphia's lack of pass volume, as quarterback Jalen Hurts attempted just 45 total passes in the team's first two contests. Faced with a much more pass-happy game script in Week 3 after falling behind early to Los Angeles, Hurts attempted 32 passes, and Brown was the beneficiary. The 28-year-old Brown remains a must-start fantasy wide receiver, although he will likely need to be more efficient on a lower volume of targets than other top wideouts around the league.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. Sep 21 9:00pm CT
Tyrone Tracy Jr.

New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (shoulder) will not return to his team's Week 3 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs due to a shoulder injury, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Tracy left the game in the first half, and he'll finish the night with 29 rushing yards on seven carries and seven receiving yards on two catches. Rookie running back Cam Skattebo figures to take over as the lead back in Tracy's absence, with veteran Devin Singletary working in as well. The full severity of Tracy's injury is not yet known, but he appeared to be in significant pain after landing awkwardly on his shoulder.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba Sep 21 8:50pm CT
Jaxon Smith-Njigba

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba continued his tremendous start to the 2025 season in his team's 44-13 Week 3 win over the New Orleans Saints. Smith-Njigba hauled in five catches on six targets for 96 yards and a touchdown, bringing his season totals to 22 catches, 323 yards, and one score. The 23-year-old was a late addition to Seattle's injury report leading into Sunday due to an illness, but he still managed to dominate. Smith-Njigba is a must-start fantasy wide receiver and may be establishing himself as one of the league's truly elite players at the position.

Luther Burden III Sep 21 8:40pm CT
Luther Burden III

Chicago Bears rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III had a breakout game in Week 3 against the Dallas Cowboys. Burden hauled in all three of his targets for 101 yards and a score in his team's first win of the 2025 season. Burden had recorded just two catches for two yards through Chicago's first two games of the season, so this could be the breakout game that propels him into a more consistent role in the Bears' offense. The 21-year-old has plenty of target competition around him in Chicago, so it will be tough for fantasy managers to trust him until he proves this is more than a one-week blip. Still, the talented rookie is a player to monitor heading into Week 4.

James Conner Sep 21 8:30pm CT
James Conner

Arizona Cardinals running back James Conner (ankle) suffered a gruesome ankle injury during his team's Week 3 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. According to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss, a source told him that they "assume" Conner's ankle injury is severe enough to end his season, but "an official prognosis hasn't been made yet." If Conner is indeed looking at a season-ending injury, second-year running back Trey Benson would be in line for a significantly expanded role in Arizona. Benson finished Week 3 with 51 yards from scrimmage on 13 touches. Running back Emari Demercado could also factor into the backfield mix for the Cardinals.

Courtland Sutton Sep 21 8:20pm CT
Courtland Sutton

Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton bounced back from an underwhelming outing in Week 2 with a huge game in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Sutton hauled in six of eight targets for 118 yards and a touchdown. If there were any questions about Sutton's status as the clear WR1 in Denver, those should be put to rest. The 29-year-old has now recorded 13 catches for 185 yards and two touchdowns through the first three weeks of 2025. Sutton profiles as a low-end fantasy WR2 heading into a favorable Week 4 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Omarion Hampton Sep 21 8:20pm CT
Omarion Hampton

Los Angeles Chargers rookie running back Omarion Hampton had the best game of his young career in Week 3 against the Denver Broncos. Hampton rushed 19 times for 70 yards and a touchdown, adding six catches for 59 yards on seven targets as well. Perhaps most critically for his fantasy status, Hampton may be in line for a massive workload going forward after the unfortunate news that veteran Chargers running back Najee Harris (Achilles) suffered an Achilles injury in Week 3. The 22-year-old Hampton has now recorded 215 yards from scrimmage and a touchdown on 51 total touches. With Harris potentially missing significant time, Hampton could vault back into being a must-start fantasy running back.

Mac Jones Sep 21 8:10pm CT
Mac Jones

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones (knee) told members of the media that he re-aggravated his PCL sprain during Sunday's Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals. He had previously suffered the injury during training camp but was healthy in time for the regular season opener earlier this month. While the re-aggravated ailment did affect Jones' productivity, he was able to play through the injury, leading the 49ers to a win with Brock Purdy (shoulder) sidelined. The former first-round pick finished Sunday's divisional contest having completed 27 of 41 pass attempts for 284 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Jones' status for Week 4 is uncertain, but it may be a moot point with Purdy nearing his return. Fantasy managers should stay tuned for updates on both quarterbacks when the 49ers issue their first injury report of the week on Wednesday.

Tyrone Tracy Jr. Sep 21 8:10pm CT
Tyrone Tracy Jr.

New York Giants running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (shoulder) is questionable to return to his team's Week 3 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs due to a shoulder injury, per Ralph Vacchiano of Fox Sports. The 25-year-old took a hit along the sideline and immediately pointed to his affected shoulder. Tracy Jr. recorded 29 yards on seven carries and seven receiving yards on two catches before getting hurt. If Tracy Jr. is unable to return, rookie running back Cam Skattebo would likely handle the lion's share of backfield snaps for the Giants for the remainder of Week 3.

Drake Maye Sep 21 8:00pm CT
Drake Maye

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye completed 28 of his 37 pass attempts for 268 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception during Sunday's Week 3 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He also carried the football seven times for 45 yards on the ground. Furthermore, the former first-round pick took five sacks and lost a fumble. While it was far from a clean game for Maye, he did salvage his fantasy showing with the 300-plus total yards and two touchdowns. He'll look to address the turnovers before heading into a Week 4 showdown against the Carolina Panthers, who just held the Atlanta Falcons to zero points. He is the overall QB4 in fantasy points through three weeks, making him a worthwhile fantasy starter going forward.

Kyren Williams Sep 21 8:00pm CT
Kyren Williams

Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams rushed for 94 yards on 20 carries during Sunday's Week 3 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. He also converted three targets into two catches, 18 receiving yards, and a receiving touchdown. The 25-year-old played 75.8 percent of the offensive snaps in the loss, which is up nearly six percent from his snap share in Week 2. Although Blake Corum continues to handle some volume, he's not really pushing for the starting job. Williams remains the lead back in Los Angeles, and his ability to make an impact in the passing game on Sunday bodes well for his fantasy value going forward. He'll rank as a mid-range RB2 heading into next week's clash with a surging, undefeated Colts squad.

CeeDee Lamb Sep 21 8:00pm CT
CeeDee Lamb

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (ankle) said that he "absolutely" believes that he can play in next Sunday's Week 4 contest against the Green Bay Packers. Lamb injured his ankle on a rushing attempt in the early portion of the Cowboys' Week 3 loss to the Chicago Bears. He exited to receive treatment, returned for one play, and then exited again. After his second departure from the game, he did not return. The star pass catcher finished without a catch, and his rushing attempt was nullified due to a penalty, so he didn't actually record a statistic in the game. George Pickens handled the No. 1 receiver duties the rest of the way, but it sounds like he'll drop back to the No. 2 role if Lamb is indeed able to suit up for next week's Sunday Night Football battle with the Packers. When healthy, he's a mid-to-high WR1 option in fantasy football.

Najee Harris Sep 21 7:50pm CT
Najee Harris

Preliminary testing indicates that Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris suffered a torn Achilles during Sunday's Week 3 win over the Denver Broncos, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harris suffered the injury on a non-contact play while planting his feet in the backfield, and he was eventually carted off the field. The Chargers will order additional testing to confirm Harris' diagnosis, but he's likely done for the season. It's a crushing blow for the veteran running back, who had never missed a game due to injury before arriving in Los Angeles. This summer, he injured his eye during a fireworks incident, and now, he's likely done for the year with a torn Achilles. He'll work to recover and get healthy before hitting free agency for the second consecutive offseason next March. In the meantime, Omarion Hampton will take over full possession of the lead-back role while Hassan Haskins offers a change of pace.

Graham Gano Sep 21 7:40pm CT
Graham Gano

New York Giants kicker Graham Gano (groin) suffered a groin injury while warming up for Sunday Night Football against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3. He is now questionable to kick in the primetime contest, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The 38-year-old has been perfect with his leg so far this season, going 5-for-5 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra points. He entered this week as the overall K10 in fantasy football, making him a borderline starter in managers' lineups. Given the timing of Gano's injury, it's most likely too late to replace Gano in fantasy football lineups this week. Even if managers have the opportunity to replace him, the only remaining options are Harrison Butker, Tyler Loop, and Jake Bates, who are likely rostered in most leagues. New York may attempt two-point conversions after touchdowns, depending on the veteran's status.

Caleb Williams Sep 21 7:30pm CT
Caleb Williams

Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams completed 19 of his 28 pass attempts for 298 yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions during Sunday's Week 3 win over the Dallas Cowboys. He also rushed for 12 yards and didn't take a single sack. The former No. 1 pick had the best outing of his young career as he and the Bears secured their first win of the 2025 season. He has quietly put together a terrific start to his second pro season, totaling eight touchdowns and one turnover while ranking as the overall QB2 in fantasy football so far. He's a top-12 option heading into Week 4 against the Las Vegas Raiders and should be started in most leagues.
