Broncos' Sean Payton calls B.S. on 'tush push' critics

Tue Sep 30 4:15pm ET
Field Level Media

If the Philadelphia Eagles successfully execute the "tush push" against Denver on Sunday, Broncos coach Sean Payton will tip his cap to what he considers a well conceived play.

A long-time supporter of the controversial play despite not implementing it in Denver's offensive scheme, Payton said he questions the motives behind those around the league who have attempted to ban the short-yardage play popularized and oft-executed by the Eagles.

Philadelphia converted 28-of-34 tush push attempts last season.

A proposal to ban the tush push fell short of the required 24 votes at the NFL owners meetings in May, with ESPN reporting the final vote was 22-10. While the Broncos were reportedly one of those 22 teams, Payton has long been in favor of it.

Critics have cited several issues with the rugby-style play, from aesthetics to competitive reasons. But Payton's skeptic alarm rang when detractors began citing healthy and safety concerns minus any conclusive supporting data.

"I was one that stood up in favor of (the tush push). The reason I stood up in favor of is pretty simple. If the powers to be don't want it for aesthetic reasons, or competitive reasons, or it's hard to officiate, etc.," Payton said on Tuesday. "I've been involved in those meetings for a long time, and when all of the sudden health and safety was pulled into that which might be the safest play in football, my (bulls--t) nose kind of went up."

Also nicknamed the "Brotherly Shove," the play typically features Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts taking the snap in short-yards situations and driving his legs forward while being pushed from behind.

Philadelphia introduced new wrinkles into the play in last week's win at Tampa Bay. There was a fake tush push that resulted in a touchdown by running back Saquon Barkley, while Hurts threw for another score on another variation of the play.

"I think credit Philadelphia. Take a peek at this past week's touchdown off the tush push look, and it was a sweep to the left," Payton said in a video conference Tuesday. "I'm one that looks at it as long as the line of scrimmage is clean, that it's a well-run quarterback sneak. When you really evaluate it, it's more the technique of the sneak than the push.

"You go all the way back to (1967), Green Bay against Dallas in the 'Ice Bowl' and (Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback) Bart Starr crosses the goal line with someone pushing a little bit behind him. So I was one that was in favor of leaving it alone on Philly's side."

Green Bay was the team that drafted the proposal, reportedly at the suggestion of the NFL, citing player safety concerns. There have been additional concerns raised this season, with officials reportedly having been instructed to place more emphasis on ensuring the offensive line doesn't move until the ball is snapped.

"I am done with the tush push guys. It's a hard play to officiate," FOX NFL rules analyst Dean Blandino said earlier this month.

The Packers play the Eagles on Nov. 10 in a "Monday Night Football" game at Lambeau Field.

The Eagles defeated the Packers twice last season -- in the season opener at Brazil and in a postseason rematch at Philadelphia -- and are 3-0 in the matchup since coach Nick Sirianni was hired in 2021.

Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 5

Player Notes
Darnell Washington Sep 30 4:20pm ET
Darnell Washington

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Darnell Washington snagged all three of his targets for 20 yards in a 24-21 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. The third-year pro was held without a catch through his first three games this season but emerged as the most productive tight end on the team in Week 4. In addition to his fantasy output, Washington saw the field for 48 of a possible 53 snaps, far exceeding the snap shares of Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith. At 6'7", Washington is incredibly effective as a blocker, and his utilization resulted in a successful day on the ground for running back Kenneth Gainwell. While Washington isn't likely to earn a significant role as a pass-catcher, it was promising to see him get on the same page as quarterback Aaron Rodgers last week. He remains off the fantasy radar for now, but Washington will be a name to monitor when Pittsburgh returns from its Week 5 bye.

Jonnu Smith Sep 30 4:00pm ET
Jonnu Smith

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jonnu Smith has been quiet for fantasy purposes since his debut with the team in which he earned six targets and scored a touchdown. Still, he played on more than 50% of offensive snaps in each of his first three games, with a season-high 83% snap share in Week 3. In Week 4, Smith was relegated to just 13 snaps, 25% of the Steelers' total, while Darnell Washington, Connor Heyward, and Pat Freiermuth all played ahead of him. Smith was limited in practice last week with a hip injury, which could explain his limited usage in Sunday's win against the Minnesota Vikings in Dublin, Ireland. He will likely see more playing time when the Steelers return from a Week 5 bye, but it will be difficult to trust Smith if Washington continues to have a role in the offense after playing 48-of-53 snaps last week. The 30-year-old can be dropped or left on waivers in most redraft formats.

Jason Sanders Sep 30 4:00pm ET
Jason Sanders

Miami Dolphins kicker Jason Sanders (hip) is expected to remain on the injured reserve this weekend when the Dolphins face the Carolina Panthers in Week 5, despite being eligible to return. Their top kicker has been on the IR since the beginning of the campaign due to a hip injury. However, David Furones of The Sun Sentinel noted that Sanders is "approaching" his return. As a result, fantasy managers should expect Riley Patterson to remain the starting kicker this weekend. Last season, Sanders posted a strong 90.2% FG%, going 37-41 on attempts and 12-for-14 on 50+ yard attempts. Patterson has gone 4-for-4 on attempts and 9-for-9 on extra points this season. Given that he has yet to tally double-digit fantasy points in a single game this season, he carries low-end streaming upside in Week 5.

Cooper Rush Sep 30 3:50pm ET
Cooper Rush

With Lamar Jackson (hamstring) expected to miss Sunday's contests against the Houston Texans, the Ravens will likely turn to Cooper Rush to serve as the QB1. Rush replaced Jackson during the Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last weekend. The former Cowoby went 9-for-13 with 52 passing yards and no scores or interceptions. Last season, Rush served as the QB1 in Dallas for nearly half the season with Dak Prescott sidelined. Through Weeks 9 through 17, Rush averaged 15.5 PPR points per game and held a solid 12:4 TD:INT. During this stretch, he averaged 1991. passing yards per game. Given his tough matchup this weekend against the Texans, who have allowed the fewest PPR points to opposing QBs, managers should only look to start Rush in deeper 14+ superflex formats.

Calvin Austin III Sep 30 3:40pm ET
Calvin Austin III

Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III (shoulder) managed just two receptions for 13 yards in a Week 4 victory over the Minnesota Vikings before exiting with a shoulder injury in the fourth quarter. Austin was evaluated at a hospital in Dublin, Ireland before heading home for a Week 5 bye. There have been conflicting reports regarding the severity of Austin's injury, but the consensus seems to be that he will miss some time. The 26-year-old had been operating as Pittsburgh's WR2 behind DK Metcalf and displayed encouraging signs of chemistry with new quarterback Aaron Rodgers. There is potential for Austin to become a fantasy contributor later in the season, but it's difficult to justify stashing him through the team's bye in most redraft leagues, especially if he can't be moved to an IR spot.

Malachi Corley Sep 30 3:30pm ET
Malachi Corley

Wide receiver Malachi Corley is set to join the Browns' active roster in a corresponding move that shifted Cedric Tillman (hamstring) to the injured reserve. Corley was signed to the Cleveland practice squad shortly before the regular season. In 2024, Corley was drafted in the third round (65th overall) by the New York Jets but was never able to carve out a prominent role in their offense. As a rookie, Corley caught just three of his six targets for 16 yards. He added 26 yards on two rushing attempts. Fantasy managers in deeper dynasty formats should monitor his status as he could be given opportunities in the Cleveland offense if Tillman were to miss a significant portion of the season. For now, Jerry Jeudy and rookie Isaiah Bond figure to serve as the team's top wide receivers.

Dillon Gabriel Sep 30 3:30pm ET
Dillon Gabriel

According to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports, the Cleveland Browns are expected to turn to rookie Dillon Gabriel to lead the offense in their Week 5 tilt against the Minnesota Vikings. Throughout the first four games of the season, the Browns have given QB1 duties to veteran Joe Flacco. However, Flacco has struggled in this role, winning just one game and averaging a modest 203.8 passing yards per game. During their Week 4 loss to the Lions, Flacco threw two interceptions and totaled just 184 passing yards. Gabriel has seen limited action through the first four games, only entering in the final frames. In Week 2, Gabriel went 3-for-3 with 19 yards and a score against the Ravens, but could not complete his lone passing attempt in Week 4. The Browns selected Gabriel in the third round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Oregon. Last season, Gabriel led the Ducks to a 13-1 record and was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. He is worth a look in all superflex formats as a mid-end QB2 ahead of his first start.

Cedric Tillman Sep 30 3:20pm ET
Cedric Tillman

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Cleveland Browns are placing wide receiver Cedric Tillman (hamstring) on the injured reserve. The former third-round pick suffered this injury during their loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon. As a result, Tillman will miss at least the next four games. In a corresponding move, the Browns signed wide receivers Malachi Corley and Gage Larvadain to the active roster. Through four games, Tillman operated as a starting option in the passing attack and caught 11 passes for 106 yards and two scores. However, with Tillman slated to miss time, fantasy managers should expect veteran Jerry Jeudy to take the lead role in the offense, while rookie Isaiah Bond is expected to see a larger target share.

Brashard Smith Sep 30 3:10pm ET
Brashard Smith

After seeing the heaviest involvement of his young career, Kansas City Chiefs rookie running back Brashard Smith could be in line for additional touches. A day after Sunday's win over the Ravens, head coach Andy Reid told reporters that offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is trying to increase Smith's reps each week while putting him in a position to succeed. A converted wide receiver, Smith's ability to make plays in space was on display Sunday, as he averaged 10 yards after the catch on his three receptions. With neither Isiah Pacheco nor Kareem Hunt doing much to capitalize on what has been a near 50/50 split through four weeks, Smith could easily see his snap share increase. Having seemingly earned his coaches' trust, his big-play ability could make him flex-worthy in a pinch, especially if the staff goes out of its way to design plays for his unique skillset.

Stefon Diggs Sep 30 3:10pm ET
Stefon Diggs

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs was on the field for 31 out of 49 offensive snaps in Sunday's blowout win over the Panthers. His 69% snap share was the highest of the season, resulting in his best game as a Patriot. Diggs caught six of his team-leading seven targets for 101 yards. Considering Drake Maye only threw 17 passes on the day, Diggs accounted for over 40% of the team's target share. Still less than a year removed from surgery to repair his torn ACL, Diggs could soon become a weekly play, rewarding fantasy managers who were able to hold onto him through a slow start to the season.

From RotoBaller

Cedrick Wilson Sep 30 3:10pm ET
Cedrick Wilson

The Miami Dolphins are signing wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. from the New Orleans Saints practice squad. The 29-year-old wideout spent two seasons in Miami (2022 and 2023) before moving to New Orleans for the 2024 campaign. This move comes after top wide receiver Tyreek Hill (knee) suffered a season-ending knee injury during their victory over the Jets on Monday evening. In 2024, Wilson caught 20 passes for 211 yards with the Saints. With the Dolphins, Wilson totaled 432 total yards across two seasons and operated in a depth role. However, with Hlll sidelined, Wilson could eventually carve out a more prominent role in the passing attack. However, for the time being, fantasy managers should expect Jalyen Waddle to serve as the team's clear WR1.

Lamar Jackson Sep 30 3:03pm ET
Lamar Jackson

Baltimore Ravens QB Lamar Jackson (hamstring) is likely to miss Week 5 against the Houston Texans.

Fantasy Spin: Cooper Rush will be the starter for the Ravens in the absence of Jackson in Week 5. Rush was 9-for-13 passing, replacing Jackson in Week 4, and threw for 52 yards. He is not projected to be worth installing into your fantasy lineup in place of the former MVP at this time.

From TheHuddle

Ollie Gordon II Sep 30 2:50pm ET
Ollie Gordon II

For the second game in a row, Miami Dolphins rookie running back Ollie Gordon II was on the field for about a quarter of his team's snaps. Unlike last week, when he was able to make a fantasy contribution with his 4.2 yards per carry and first career touchdown, he was held in check during Monday night's win over the Jets. Gordon turned his six carries into only 10 yards and was unable to secure his only target. Playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in the league, Gordon still can't be trusted as a flex play, even as bye weeks have arrived. Clearly still viewed as little more than a change of pace back, and without the ability of teammate De'Von Achane to make something out of nothing on his limited carries, fantasy managers starting Gordon will be disappointed anytime he does not fall into the endzone.

From RotoBaller

Xavier Worthy Sep 30 2:40pm ET
Xavier Worthy

In his first game back since dislocating his shoulder three snaps into the season, Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver caught five of his team-leading eight targets for 83 yards. He added 38 yards on the ground, as the team had a clear goal of putting the ball in the hands of their most dynamic playmaker. Against a depleted Ravens defense, the Chiefs put up 37 points after averaging only 20 across their first three games. With Rashee Rice still serving the final two games of his six-game suspension, Worthy should see continued success in what could turn into high-scoring affairs against the Jaguars and Lions. He will still be playable upon Rice's return, but fantasy managers blessed with the depth to take a wait-and-see approach might want to give it a game to see what the Chiefs' offense looks like at that point, as Worthy, Rice, and Marquise Brown have never played a game together.

From RotoBaller

Braelon Allen Sep 30 2:20pm ET
Braelon Allen

New York Jets second-year running back Braelon Allen (knee) left Monday night's game against the Dolphins and has since been diagnosed with an MCL sprain that will likely land him on IR. Allen is expected to receive additional opinions, but if he is placed on IR, he'll miss at least four games. Despite a fumble near the goal line, Allen had been running hard in the game, turning four carries into 26 yards. If Allen is indeed sidelined, the Jets will look to consolidate carries between Breece Hall and Isaiah Davis, making Hall a must-start for the foreseeable future and Davis an attractive option on waiver wires. In his limited action last season, Davis was the most efficient Jets running back, averaging nearly six yards per carry. He has seen only 10 opportunities this year, through the air and on the ground, but he's turned that into over 50 yards, and at 220 pounds, he should not look out of place handling Allen's duties in short-yardage situations.

Robbie Chosen Sep 30 2:00pm ET
Robbie Chosen

The Washington Commanders are signing veteran wide receiver Robbie Chosen to their practice squad on Tuesday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Chosen will give Washington some more receiver depth going into Week 5 against the Los Angeles Chargers, with both Terry McLaurin (quadriceps) and Noah Brown (groin, knee) up in the air to play this weekend. The 32-year-old pass-catcher failed to stick around with the San Francisco 49ers despite all their injured bodies, and he might not stick around for long if McLaurin and Brown can return soon. Chosen, a nine-year NFL veteran, has bounced around the league in recent years and has played in only 11 games the last two years with the Miami Dolphins, catching five of 10 targets for 131 yards and one touchdown. Second-year wideout Luke McCaffrey has benefited the most the last two weeks with McLaurin injured.

From RotoBaller

Roman Wilson Sep 30 1:50pm ET
Roman Wilson

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith said there could be more opportunities for Roman Wilson and the team's other receivers going forward, depending on the health of Calvin Austin III (shoulder), who left the Week 4 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland with a shoulder injury. Wilson had played at least 17% of the offensive snaps in the first three weeks of the season, but that number fell to 6% in Sunday's win over Minnesota. The 24-year-old hasn't been targeted in three of four games this year, catching one of his two targets for seven yards in the Week 2 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Pittsburgh has its bye in Week 5, so it's entirely possible that Austin will be ready to go in Week 6 against the division-rival Cleveland Browns, thus relegating Wilson to a low-volume role yet again.

From RotoBaller

Isaiah Davis Sep 30 1:40pm ET
Isaiah Davis

New York Jets running back Isaiah Davis drew a slightly larger workload in Monday night's 27-21 loss to the hosting Miami Dolphins after backfield mate Braelon Allen (knee) exited with injury. Davis wasn't a factor on the ground - churning out just nine yards on his three carries - but he took over Allen's work in the passing game (2/18), and again eclipsed the 100-yard mark as a returner (108). The Jets leaned on teammate Breece Hall for the most part, but if Allen were to miss any extended time, then Davis would take over as the primary handcuff to own. The South Dakota State alum probably won't garner enough work to be useful for fantasy with Hall in front of him. Still, he's a decent flex play in leagues that award points for return yards, especially against better offenses. Since taking over the duties in Week 2, he's racked up 323 yards on 11 returns.

From RotoBaller

Lamar Jackson Sep 30 1:40pm ET
Lamar Jackson

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson (hamstring) is likely to miss the Week 5 game on Sunday against the Houston Texans, sources tell The Baltimore Sun's Brian Wacker. Jackson tweaked his hamstring in the Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and didn't return to the game. The Ravens have yet to give a specific diagnosis on Jackson, but apparently, it's a serious enough injury to potentially keep him out for multiple weeks. It would be a big blow to the 1-3 Ravens, as their offense will have considerably less upside if backup signal-caller Cooper Rush is forced to start. We will have a better idea of Jackson's Week 5 status when Baltimore resumes practicing on Wednesday, but as of right now, fantasy managers need to formulate a backup plan if they don't already have one. The Texans' defense/special teams would become a must-start if Rush is forced into action.

From RotoBaller

Mason Taylor Sep 30 1:30pm ET
Mason Taylor

New York Jets tight end Mason Taylor again saw increased volume in his team's 27-21 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 4. The rookie set all new career-highs in Monday night's defeat, corralling 5-of-7 targets for 65 yards. In addition to those marks being new personal bests, they were good enough for second on the team behind wide receiver Garrett Wilson. After the solid outing, it's clear that this passing attack will funnel through Taylor, Wilson, and running back Breece Hall, as they're lapping the field in target share. Wilson commands most of quarterback Justin Fields' attention, so the LSU product will be subject to games with limited target quantities. However, he's an ascending asset with a TE1 finish under his belt. Taylor will have an excellent chance to continue his string of success in Week 5 against a Cowboys team that is friendly for fantasy.
