Former Jets All-Pro C Nick Mangold, 41, needs kidney transplant

Tue Oct 14 5:19pm ET
Field Level Media

New York Jets great Nick Mangold announced on social media on Tuesday afternoon that he is undergoing dialysis and needs a kidney transplant.

The two-time first-team All-NFL and seven-time Pro Bowl center revealed on his X (Twitter) account that he has chronic kidney disease and is reaching out to Jets and Ohio State Buckeyes supporters for a donor as none of his family members are a match.

"This isn't an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what's been happening with me and my health," Mangold, 41, wrote. "In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. After a rough summer, I'm undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have had more time.

"Unfortunately, I do not have any family able to donate at this time, so this is why I'm reaching out to you, our NY Jets and Ohio State communities. I am in need of a kidney donor with type O blood."

Mangold include a website for prospective donors, https://columbiasurgery.org/kidney-transplant, and instructions to use his full name, Nicholas Mangold, and his birthdate, 1/13/1984.

"I am deeply grateful to anyone that would consider donating," he wrote. "Most of all, I'm thankful for my family, who have been my rock every step of the way. This situation has reminded me how lucky I am to have such an amazing family, friends, and community behind me.

"While this has been a tough stretch, I'm staying positive and focused on the path ahead. I'm looking forward to better days and getting back to full strength soon. I'll see you all at MetLife Stadium & The Shoe very soon."

The Jets selected Mangold with the 29th overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft out of Ohio State. He was a first-team All-American in 2005 for the Buckeyes and was inducted into the school's athletic Hall of Fame in 2023.

He played for only one NFL team, starting all 164 regular-season games from 2006-16 and all seven playoff contests. Mangold was voted first-team All-Pro in 2009 and 2010 and was selected to the 2006 NFL All-Rookie Team.

The Jets released him in February 2017 and re-signed him in April 2018 for his retirement from the NFL. He was inducted into the team's Ring of Honor in 2022.

Mangold is on the list of 128 modern-era players nominated for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2026.

Waiver Wire Pickups: Week 7

Player Notes
Brett Rypien Oct 14 7:50pm ET
Brett Rypien

Veteran free-agent quarterback Brett Rypien signed with the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad on Tuesday, a source told Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. Anthony Richardson Sr. (eye) suffered a fractured orbital bone before Sunday's win over the Arizona Cardinals when a resistance band snapped and hit him in the face. With Richardson expected to be out multiple weeks, the Colts placed him on Injured Reserve on Monday, meaning he will be out at least four games. Rypien will give the Colts added QB insurance behind starter Daniel Jones and new No. 2 Riley Leonard. The 29-year-old was with the Minnesota Vikings in training camp before joining the Cincinnati Bengals. He played three offensive snaps with Cincy but was cut after the Bengals acquired veteran QB Joe Flacco in a trade. Rypien has completed 58.3% of his pass attempts for 950 passing yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 11 career games (four starts) since entering the league in 2020 with the Denver Broncos.

Michael Pittman Jr. Oct 14 7:30pm ET
Michael Pittman Jr.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. turned in a slow performance in a 31-27 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6. Pittman caught just two of his three targets for 20 yards in the close win, breaking a five-game streak where he caught at least four passes or a touchdown. The veteran took a backseat to Tyler Warren and Josh Downs against Arizona, but he had been operating as the Colts' top wide receiver in the five previous games before Week 6's win over the Cardinals. Pittman will now look to bounce back in Week 7's road matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. He can be deployed as a WR3 in fantasy for that contest.

Alec Pierce Oct 14 7:30pm ET
Alec Pierce

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce caught two of his four targets for 48 yards in a 31-27 win over the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6. Pierce made his return to the field after missing the two previous games with a concussion. The veteran immediately returned to his role as the team's field stretcher, hauling in passes of 26 and 22 yards in the close win. Pierce has just 11 catches on the season but has turned that into 219 yards, good for a 19.9 yards per catch average. The veteran receiver will now get ready to face off against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 7. He sets up as a boom/bust flex option for that contest.

Terrel Bernard Oct 14 7:30pm ET
Terrel Bernard

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott said that both linebackers Matt Milano (pectoral) and Terrel Bernard (ankle) are day-to-day with their injuries, according to Maddy Glab of BuffaloBills.com. Milano has missed three of the team's last four games with his pec injury, while Bernard injured his ankle in the Monday night loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The good news is that Buffalo is on their bye in Week 8, so their defense may have both Milano and Bernard available for their next contest in Week 9 versus the Carolina Panthers. Shaq Thompson has been filling in for Milano after he aggravated his chest injury in Week 5. Buffalo's defense definitely was overmatched against a star-studded Falcons offense on Monday night, but it sounds like they could be closer to full strength on that side of the ball following their bye in Week 7.

David Bell Oct 14 7:20pm ET
David Bell

Cleveland Browns wide receiver David Bell (hip) announced on his X account on Tuesday that he is retiring from professional football. Bell will call it quits after suffering an off-the-field hip injury that put him on the Non-Football Injury list entering the 2025 season. The 24-year-old was a third-round selection by the Browns in the 2022 NFL draft out of Purdue. He never ended up being much of an asset for the Browns' passing game in his three seasons in the NFL, and his best showing came in his rookie campaign when he caught 24 of his 35 targets for 214 yards and no touchdowns in 16 games (three starts) in 2022. Bell will finish his short NFL career with 41 receptions, 408 receiving yards, and three touchdowns (all in 2023) in 32 games played (six starts).

Jerry Jeudy Oct 14 7:20pm ET
Jerry Jeudy

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jerry Jeudy caught five of his 13 targets for 43 yards in a 23-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6. Jeudy led the team in targets but continued his season-long trend of doing very little with his opportunities as he was held to 48 receiving yards or fewer for the fourth straight game. Overall, Jeudy has caught 20 passes for 240 scoreless yards through five games as Cleveland's No. 1 receiver. He will now head back home to face off against the Miami Dolphins in Week 7. The Dolphins are allowing just the 23rd-most fantasy points per game to opposing wideouts, leaving Jeudy as a low-end flex option for his upcoming weekend.

From RotoBaller

Isaiah Bond Oct 14 7:20pm ET
Isaiah Bond

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Isaiah Bond turned in a quiet outing in a 23-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6. Bond caught two of his five targets for nine yards in the loss in his least productive game since Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens. The rookie wideout had been trending upward before the poor outing in Week 6, but now has just 11 catches for 123 scoreless yards in six games. He will look to bounce back at home in Week 7 against the Miami Dolphins. Fantasy managers can likely find a better flex option sitting on waiver wires this week.

From RotoBaller

Dillon Gabriel Oct 14 7:10pm ET
Dillon Gabriel

Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel completed 29 of his 52 pass attempts for 221 yards and no touchdowns in a 23-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6. Gabriel struggled to get much going against a struggling Pittsburgh defense, leading his team to just three field goals while averaging just 4.3 passing yards per attempt in his second career start. The rookie signal caller has now thrown for 430 yards and three touchdowns while completing 57.3% of his passes thus far. Gabriel will now look to bounce back against a Miami Dolphins defense that is allowing 29 points per game, fourth-most in the NFL. That being said, Gabriel will be tough to trust as anything more than a high-end QB3 in Week 7.

From RotoBaller

Quinshon Judkins Oct 14 7:10pm ET
Quinshon Judkins

Cleveland Browns running back Quinshon Judkins turned in a slow outing in a 23-9 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 6. Judkins carried the ball 12 times for just 36 yards while failing to catch his lone target on a rough afternoon for the Cleveland offense against their division rivals. The slow outing was Judkins' first dud since he signed his contract before Week 2, as the rookie had been remarkably consistent up until Week 6. He will look to bounce back against a Miami Dolphins defense that is allowing the fifth-most fantasy points per game to opposing running backs in 2025. Judkins can be treated as a low-end RB1 heading into Week 7.

From RotoBaller

Tanner Hudson Oct 14 6:50pm ET
Tanner Hudson

Cincinnati Bengals tight end Tanner Hudson (concussion) remains in the league's concussion protocol and was listed as a non-participant in practice on Tuesday for the second straight day this week, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic. Hudson suffered a concussion in the Week 6 loss to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday and probably isn't going to be cleared in time to face the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday Night Football. In addition to Hudson, fellow TE Mike Gesicki (pectoral) suffered an injury on Sunday and is expected to be out for a while. That will leave Noah Fant as the team's likely top pass-catching tight end for Thursday night's game. Drew Sample and Cam Grandy could also have elevated roles. Fant, a former first-rounder by the Denver Broncos, has been efficient in limited work this year, catching 16 of his 18 targets for 107 yards and a touchdown.

From RotoBaller

Romeo Doubs Oct 14 6:50pm ET
Romeo Doubs

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Romeo Doubs has been a consistently inconsistent fantasy receiver throughout his career, with spike week games followed by games where he flat out disappears. In a Packers' offense that trends aggressively this season with downfield throws, quarterback Jordan Love has been one of the best quarterbacks in the league in EPA per play and other similar metrics. For fantasy, we haven't seen that materialize to consistent fantasy success, but Doubs has been excellent over the last two games for the Packers. With a combined 17 targets and a 31 percent first-read target rate, Love is utilizing Doubs as his most consistent target through five games, but especially in recent games, as Doubs has had his two best fantasy finishes of the season (WR3 and WR30) in the last two weeks. For fantasy, Doubs has earned WR3 or high-end flex treatment in Week 7 against the Arizona Cardinals.

From RotoBaller

Josh Jacobs Oct 14 6:50pm ET
Josh Jacobs

Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs has been a monster contributor for the Packers this season and is looking like not just one of the best running backs in fantasy, but in the NFL as well. Finishing RB2 in Week 4 and RB3 in Week 6, Jacobs has put together two straight weeks of 30 or more fantasy points. What has been the difference? Well, Jacobs has gotten into the end zone twice on the ground on an excellent 4.5 yards per carry. What's helping him achieve this upside is the receiving aspect of Jacobs' game. Over the last three contests, Jacobs has averaged six targets, five receptions, and 57 receiving yards per game, which takes a good fantasy running back and makes him great. Against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 7, lock Jacobs in as a top-end fantasy RB1.

From RotoBaller

Trey Hendrickson Oct 14 6:50pm ET
Trey Hendrickson

For the second straight day this week on Tuesday, Cincinnati Bengals All-Pro pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson (hip) was listed as a non-participant after injuring his hip in Sunday's loss at Lambeau Field to the Green Bay Packers, according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic. Hendrickson was labeled as day-to-day by the Bengals on Monday, and it remains unclear if he will be able to play on Thursday night against the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers. It could come down to a game-time decision. The 30-year-old is by far and away the team's best defensive player, so losing Hendrickson in Week 7 would be a big blow as Cincy looks to put an end to its losing streak. Fantasy managers in IDP leagues better have a backup plan in place this week. After recording 17.5 sacks in back-to-back seasons in 2023 and 2024, Hendrickson has four sacks through six games in 2025.

From RotoBaller

Josh Palmer Oct 14 5:50pm ET
Josh Palmer

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott said on Tuesday that wide receiver Joshua Palmer (ankle) is "week-to-week" after he suffered an ankle injury in the Monday night loss to the Atlanta Falcons and was unable to return, according to The Athletic's Joe Buscaglia. Palmer injured his ankle in the first half of Monday night's contest when he was tackled awkwardly, and he was unable to return to the game. He finished with two catches for 60 yards. Buffalo's bye in Week 7 is coming at a good time for Palmer, but his week-to-week designation means he won't be a lock to be ready when the Bills return to action on Oct. 26 in Week 8 against the Carolina Panthers. The 26-year-old has failed to stand out in his first year in Buffalo in an offense that continues to spread the ball around. Palmer has only 14 catches on 20 targets for 234 yards and no scores in six games. He'll be a popular drop candidate by fantasy managers with the Bills on bye in Week 7.

Treylon Burks Oct 14 5:50pm ET
Treylon Burks

After visiting with the Denver Broncos on Tuesday, former Tennessee Titans first-round wide receiver Treylon Burks will take a visit with the Washington Commanders on Wednesday, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. Despite not being able to avoid injuries early in his career with the Titans, Burks is one of the top free agents on the market in the middle of the 2025 season and should be scooped up sooner rather than later. The Commanders have a more immediate need for receiving depth right now, given injuries to Terry McLaurin (quadriceps) and Noah Brown (groin, knee). Veteran Deebo Samuel Sr. (heel) also didn't look 100% in the Monday night loss to the Chicago Bears. The fact that Burks is taking visits with interested teams means that he should be healed from the broken collarbone that he suffered in July.

From RotoBaller

Dalton Kincaid Oct 14 5:40pm ET
Dalton Kincaid

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott said on Tuesday that tight end Dalton Kincaid (oblique), who did not play in the Monday night loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 6, is "day-to-day," according to Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic. Additionally, veteran wide receiver Curtis Samuel (neck, ribs) is also considered day-to-day. Kincaid's injury isn't very serious, which is great news, especially with the Bills on their bye in Week 7. It means that both Kincaid and Samuel should be ready to go when the team returns to action in Week 8 to face the Carolina Panthers on the road on Oct. 26. Buffalo's offense struggled on Monday night against an improved Atlanta defense without Kincaid in the mix. Backup Dawson Knox found the end zone for the first time this year on Monday with Kincaid out, but it was his only catch of the game on just two targets. Fantasy managers looking for TE reinforcements going forward should probably avoid Knox.

D.J. Moore Oct 14 5:30pm ET
D.J. Moore

Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore (groin) was taken to a hospital in Washington, D.C. on Monday night for precautionary reasons following the team's one-point win over the Commanders. Moore stayed in the hospital overnight, but head coach Ben Johnson said that he is now back in Chicago, according to Scott Bair of Marquee Sports Network. The Bears will continue to monitor Moore's status going into their Week 7 contest against the New Orleans Saints. The 28-year-old was seen going into the medical tent on Monday night, but he eventually returned to the field and caught three of his five targets for 42 yards while also carrying the ball twice for 10 yards. It's unclear at this time if Moore is in danger of missing Week 7, but we should know more later in the week once the Bears resume practicing on Wednesday. If Moore cannot play this Sunday, rookie Luther Burden III would become flex-worthy in fantasy as the No. 2 behind Rome Odunze.

Calvin Austin III Oct 14 5:20pm ET
Calvin Austin III

For the second straight day this week, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III (shoulder) was a non-participant in practice on Tuesday, according to Teresa Varley of Steelers.com. Austin injured his shoulder in the Week 4 win over the Minnesota Vikings in Ireland. He had the bye in Week 5 to heal up, but it wasn't enough time, as he was inactive on Sunday in the Week 6 victory over the Cleveland Browns. With a quick week upcoming -- the Steelers play the division-rival Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night in Week 7 -- it's looking like Austin will miss a second straight game. He will certainly have to practice in some fashion on Wednesday to have a shot at being active on Thursday evening. Fantasy managers should leave Austin on their benches for another week. With Austin out in Week 6, DK Metcalf led the receiving corps, with Darnell Washington coming in second with three catches on five targets for 62 yards.

Sam Darnold Oct 14 5:10pm ET
Sam Darnold

Fantasy managers were understandably skeptical as to whether quarterback Sam Darnold could follow up his outstanding 2024 season with the Minnesota Vikings this year after heading to the NFC West to play for the Seattle Seahawks. Through six weeks with his new team, it's clear that the former third overall pick out of USC is picking up where he left off. The 28-year-old continued to play well in Week 6 against a ball-hawking Jacksonville Jaguars defense and finished just shy of 300 yards passing with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Darnold has latched onto star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba as his go-to target, and it's working. Since a mediocre 150-yard, no-touchdown performance in Week 1, Darnold has thrown for multiple touchdowns in five games and has gone 98-for-138 for 1,391 yards, 11 TDs, and three picks. He continues to be aggressive downfield and should at least be rostered in every fantasy league as a high-end QB2 going forward. He'll really be tested in Week 7 against a Houston Texans defense that has allowed the fewest fantasy points per game to opposing QBs through five games.

From RotoBaller

Hunter Long Oct 14 5:10pm ET
Hunter Long

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Hunter Long played a season-high 80% of the offensive snaps in the Week 6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday in the first game with Brenton Strange (hip) on Injured Reserve. Although Long was used more with Strange sidelined, it didn't amount to much production, as he caught only two of his three targets for 19 yards. Meanwhile, fellow TE Johnny Mundt played 39% of the snaps and caught one of two targets in the passing game for a 14-yard gain. The 27-year-old Long will continue to see more time on the field in Jacksonville's offense for as long as Strange remains out. However, for fantasy purposes, he's not going to be much more than a touchdown-dependent, low-end TE2 streamer with Mundt also contributing. Through six games so far in his first year with the Jags, Long has nine receptions on 11 targets for 63 yards and the first two touchdowns of his career in his fifth season.
