2025 NFL Draft position series: Running backs

Mon Apr 14 12:19pm ET
Field Level Media

Bank on Boise State's Ashton Jeanty adding to evidence of an all-out running back revival in the NFL.

One of three running backs with a top-30 grade in what sets up as a bountiful class of prospects, the Broncos' ball-carrier is becoming a safe bet to be off the board in the top 12 picks.

The last two RB prospects selected that early were worth the investment. Alabama's Jahmyr Gibbs went 12th to the Lions in 2023, following Texas' Bijan Robinson off the board. Robinson went eighth to the Falcons.

Jeanty would intrigue the Patriots at No. 4 and several others in the top 10, from the Raiders to the Panthers and Chicago Bears.

But a team that misses out on the cream of the RB crop need not panic this time around.

FIELD LEVEL MEDIA 2025 Draft RB rankings:

1. Ashton Jeanty, Boise State

Army-of-one runner with a combination of explosive lower-body power and determination in the open field to eradicate worry about his timed speed. Jeanty didn't run a public timed 40 in the pre-draft process. It's a virtual guarantee any team that hosted him for a private visit conducted a workout that included testing to validate what they see in film, but production and the eye test are plenty of proof with Jeanty.

He might be knocked in small scouting circles for falling short of prototypical perfection because of his arm length and height -- detriments for blitz pickup or pass-blocking long-limbed edge rushers, and reaching to secure the ball against tight pass coverage as a receiver -- but the tale of the tape told a similar story about a guy named Emmitt Smith.

Jeanty can slide laterally with light and lightning-fast feet, picking through traffic until he jumps to cut or shift gears to get downhill. He averaged 7.0 yards per carry in 2024 and had a 50-plus-yard run in nine of 14 games in his final season in Boise.

Marshawn Lynch was 5-11, 215 and ran a 4.46 40 at the 2007 NFL Scouting Combine with 20 reps of 225. Jeanty did 27 reps of 225 and has a similar history to Lynch's at Cal of breakaway runs.

The next Saquon Barkley? That might be a bridge too far.

A dynamic playmaker with an All-Pro ceiling, we reserve the right to revisit the comparison in a year or three.

2. Omarion Hampton, North Carolina

Speaking of Lynch, Hampton produced almost exactly the same 40 time (and 18 reps of 225) at 6-foot, 221 in February and has a resume tape of Beast Mode-type runs. Defenders need to bring a friend to get Hampton to the ground when he's determined, fighting for every yard on every carry.

Not a total loss laterally, but he's a downhill runner with the demeanor of a power back. Hampton isn't going to leave a vapor trail getting around the tackle on a toss or sweep. Between the tackles, he has everything an NFL team could want.

As a runner and in pass protection, having the time to turn his body and square his shoulders to the line or defenders is essential to his success.

3. TreVeyon Henderson, Ohio State

A timeshare with the Buckeyes plays in Henderson's favor with relatively low miles for a Big Ten starter. As part of a tandem each exceeding 1,000 rushing yards in 2024, Henderson had 1,300 total yards (284 receiving) with 10 rushing TDs in a co-op with Ole Miss transfer Quinshon Judkins for the national champions.

He can be indecisive but behind a squadron of tanks for blockers in the NFL, it's possible this trait won't leave college.

Henderson has also proven he's a different animal when he decides to get it and go. He's sudden -- 10-yard split of 1.52 seconds is better than Barkley's 1.54 in 2018 -- with first movement and changes direction easily, inviting a three-down role because of his soft, natural hands and focused blocking technique in pass protection.

4. Kaleb Johnson, Iowa

Capable of bowling through the defense but not always running around or away from it, Johnson's throwback traits are inviting for zone-based running teams coveting a leveraged one-cut runner with a finisher's mentality. To paint a picture of what he could become at the NFL level, Johnson racked up more than 1,000 yards after contact in 2024.

He bounces off of contact and barrels over defensive backs with a teeth-clinching grin, rarely sidestepping contact in any live situation. Want him in pass pro? He can help there, too, with a 78.5-inch wingspan to wheel speed rushers away from the quarterback or wallop undersized blitzers with his usual pop.

Proven in a pro-style offense and productive in a slightly more evolved scheme in 2024, Johnson brings a team approach to the RB room and did not fumble in 240 carries last season.

If used properly, Johnson is likely to become a starter or part of a two-headed monster -- similar to a David Montgomery role in Detroit and using many of the same traits (contact balance, vision, power, ball security). Ran a 4.57-second 40 but nobody is talking about Montgomery's 4.63 40 time because of his NFL production. He was a steal 10 picks into the third round of the 2019 draft.

5. Bhayshul Tuten, Virginia Tech

When Tuten wowed at the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine -- 4.32 40-yard dash, 40.5-inch vertical -- it wasn't a surprise to NFL scouts, nor did it answer questions of whether his timed speed will translate to the field in the NFL.

A North Carolina A&T product who spent the past two years at Virginia Tech, Tuten plays with a smooth, athletic style very similar to Tyjae Spears (Titans) coming out of Tulane. His pace, timing and overdrive gear on zone runs stand out and he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns as a junior.

Though not ideal for a lead NFL back, if you ask Tuten to lower his pads or move the pile, he's still more likely to spin or juke to slide outside and hit the boundary where he prefers to operate.

Tuten's 17 total touchdowns in 2024, big-play speed and experience in a zone-heavy offense add up to a third-down role at worst early in his career. He's already a talent that coordinators can scheme to get in the open field where he's more than capable of creating chunks plays.

6. Dylan Sampson, Tennessee

At 5-8, 199, Sampson is short but nowhere near small, playing the game with an edge and effort at all times. He was the dynamic engine of the Volunteers' all-gas, no-brakes offense and set the program record with 1,491 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns in 2024.

Willing to play the anvil at Tennessee, Sampson might need to be in a shared role in the NFL. Being the undersized aggressor is no way to survive as a pro, and Sampson knows only one way, attempting to play at or above peak speed on every rep.

A potential ace in a matchup game because of his speed and constant effort, Sampson is likely to be cast as a rotational or third-down option early in his career. At 20 years old, he has time to develop even if he's not exactly known for patience between the lines.

Durability, pushing blitzers off-course in protection and maximizing ball security are critical to him becoming more than a role player.

7. RJ Harvey, UCF

Harvey is a converted quarterback with vision and patience, but size limitations (5-8, 200) and age (turns 24 this month) are working against him. No invitation is needed to send him downhill toward defenders but he's not going to be paid to break tackles.

8. Quinshon Judkins, Ohio State

The 221-pound Judkins is country strong and appears to have the power to run over a barn. Always eager to plow through tackles, he avoided injuries at Ole Miss and Ohio State and scored 50 touchdowns with the body lean, leg drive and sledgehammer approach to star in a short-yardage role immediately. To become a starter, evolving beyond an old-school bruiser game is vital.

9. Woody Marks, USC

A five-year starter who is already 24, Marks was productive at Mississippi State and USC (2024). Not a blazer or bulldozer, but his ability to make defenders miss and shake through contact stands out for his size. He should be able to work his way into a high-end rotation role during his first contract.

10. Jordan James, Oregon

Minus game-changing speed, James is a change-of-pace back a team could entrust as a blocker and rotational option. He plays bigger than he measured with short-area burst to move the chains but limited long speed means he must take the long road to a larger role in the NFL.

Cam Ward

Dynasty | Multiple reports are circulating that Cam Ward is indeed going to be the first pick in next week's NFL Draft. Dynasty Analysis: At this point, it seems it would take what many are calling a historical trade package to move the Titans off Ward. After sneaking into the top spot the last week of the season, Tennessee tried its best to go in different direction but in the end, it seems they've been sold on Ward as their future. There's certainly nothing official here, but if they take someone else, this would be one of the greatest smokescreens in draft history.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Sam Darnold Apr 14 7:21am CT
Sam Darnold

Both ESPN's Brady Henderson and Matt Miller believe that upgrading their offensive line will be a heavy emphasis for the Seattle Seahawks in the 2025 NFL draft. Specifically, Henderson thinks Seattle needs to find at least one difference-maker on the interior of the offensive line, although general manager John Schneider believes it will be hard to upgrade at center. In addition to offensive line, a speedy receiver, a safety and a nose tackle could be targets for the Seahawks in a few weeks. They have five picks in the top 100 this year, so they have the draft capital to aid in their current roster makeover. Miller mentions University of Arizona wide receiver Teairoa McMillan as a pass-catcher that they could look to target with the No. 18 overall pick in this first round after releasing Tyler Lockett and trading DK Metcalf this offseason.

Drew Lock Apr 14 7:21am CT
Drew Lock

Dynasty | The Seahawks have signed quarterback Drew Lock. Dynasty Analysis: Lock spent time with the Seahawks backing up Geno Smith and will now return as the likely backup to Sam Darnold. Once though of as a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL, Lock just hasn't shown enough in limited action to be counted upon as a starter. He has, however, been good enough to feel like one of the better emergency backups in the league and a decent spot starter. Lock has little dynasty value at this point and this signing won't change that.

Joe Flacco Apr 14 7:21am CT
Joe Flacco

Dynasty | The Browns have signed quarterback Joe Flacco. Dynasty Analysis: The veteran quarterback found great success in his first stint with Cleveland, throwing for 1,616 yards, with 13 touchdowns and eight interceptions in relief of Deshaun Watson back in 2023. His signing is an interesting one as the Browns currently have Kenny Pickett as their de facto starter and seem to be leaning away from the quarterback position in round one of the upcoming draft. Flacco could simply be veteran depth or have a legitimate shot at being the starter this season, This whole story will be worked out after the NFL Draft in a couple of weeks.

Josh Johnson Apr 14 7:20am CT
Josh Johnson

The Washington Commanders have agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent quarterback Josh Johnson. The veteran signal-caller is back with the organization after playing four games with Washington during the 2018 season. Most recently, Johnson played with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2024 season as the backup to Lamar Jackson. Now, Johnson is set to serve as the third string behind Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota. The 38-year-old is mainly a veteran presence at this point in his career considering he hasn't started a game since 2021. Johnson has played with seven different organizations since being traded by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2008. He won't offer much value on the field, but can be a helpful mentor on the sideline.

Bo Nix Apr 13 4:00pm CT
Bo Nix

Denver Broncos tight end Evan Engram lauded his new quarterback, Bo Nix, last week in an interview with DNVR's Bennie Fowler. "He has everything that it takes to be great in this league," said Engram. The 30-year-old went on to praise Nix's dual-threat ability and noted that the team should continue to put talent around such a weapon. The Georgia native was fantastic in 2023 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, churning out an impressive 114 receptions. However, after being limited to nine games during an injury-plagued 2024, the team released him. Engram has an excellent chance to rebound with the Broncos in 2025 -- particularly as the joker in a Sean Payton offense bereft of weapons outside wideout Courtland Sutton. With Denver set to spend an early pick on running back in the draft later this month, the veteran tight end should provide solid TE1 numbers this season, barring health.

Calais Campbell Apr 13 3:50pm CT
Calais Campbell

Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Calais Campbell told reporters last week that despite entering his 18th season in the league, he still feels dominant and can "change ball games." "I'm one of those guys that love this game so much...But I feel like I'm still good at it, still dominant, and I feel I could really help this team." The journeyman hasn't hit a double-digit sack total since 2018, but he's still been a disruptive player, logging 11.5 sacks and 22 tackles for loss over the prior two seasons with 29 quarterback hits. His age hasn't affected his game, but the 38-year-old did note that shouldering a full snap load would degrade his play. The Cardinals understand this and project to use him as a rotational role player in 2025. Even in that regard, Campbell still has the propensity to be a fine asset for Arizona. Their defensive front is much improved from a season ago.

Aidan Hutchinson Apr 13 3:40pm CT
Aidan Hutchinson

Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson (leg) indicated last week that he's nearly done rehabbing from his season-ending injury last October. "I'm there. I'd say I'm good," Hutchinson told Marty Smith on Thursday at the Masters. "I've got my last evaluation tests when I get back, I leave today...and once I knock them out of the park, I'll be on my way and done with rehab." The superstar pass-rusher was a force in 2024, notching 7.5 sacks and 19 tackles in five games -- including a dominant 4.5 sack effort against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2. Hutchinson recently released a workout video of him sprinting and zig-zagging down the field, and he looks strong. The Michigan product is well on his way to being ready for training camp, and though he may not be 100% himself this season after a severe injury, his expedited return to the field has been remarkable.

Kenny Pickett Apr 13 3:20pm CT
Kenny Pickett

On Saturday, Cleveland Browns quarterback Kenny Pickett told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that the plan is for him to be the team's starting quarterback in 2025. "I'm not going there to hang out. I want to go play. I'm excited, been working hard for it, taking it a day at a time." Pickett looked to be on his way to the starting gig with the news that teammate Deshaun Watson (Achilles) could miss all of next season after rupturing his Achilles tendon again. Now, he'll incur some competition courtesy of veteran Joe Flacco. The 26-year-old struggled during his two-year stint as a Steeler but gained valuable experience with the Philadelphia Eagles during their Super Bowl run in 2024. Pickett will be awarded the starting job if he can beat out the aging veteran. Still, it isn't a foregone conclusion that the Browns won't continue to add arms with uncertainty surrounding Watson's status. The Cleveland QB situation will be one to monitor.

Evan Engram Apr 13 2:23pm CT
Evan Engram

Denver Broncos TE Evan Engram (shoulder) should be able to participate in offseason workouts, according to general manager George Paton.

Fantasy Spin: Engram is recovering from shoulder surgery and may not be a full participant during the workouts but should be ready for training camp. He should have a solid role in the passing game in 2025 and can be a No. 1 tight end in most fantasy leagues.

Joe Flacco Apr 13 1:23pm CT
Joe Flacco

Cleveland Browns QB Kenny Pickett will be competing with QB Joe Flacco for the starting quarterback job during training camp but said he plans to be the starter in 2025.

Fantasy Spin: It is not known if Pickett or Flacco will have an advantage entering camp, so fantasy players can monitor the situation. Neither quarterbacks should be considered more than a No. 2 QB in fantasy leagues.

Tee Higgins Apr 13 12:40pm CT
Tee Higgins

ESPN's Jordan Reid writes that after the lucrative extensions of wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins this offseason, the Cincinnati Bengals are expected to devote most of their six picks in the 2025 NFL draft to drafting and developing defensive players. It also makes plenty of sense with the uncertainty surrounding All-Pro pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson. Reid believes that edge rusher and defensive tackle will be the most likely targets for Cincy in the first round with the No. 17 overall pick. On Day 2, the Bengals could go for an offensive guard because they could use a starter there. Georgia's Tate Ratledge and LSU's Miles Frazier are two players that could do well in the Bengals' system. Cincy's offense can put up points with the best of them, but there defense is very suspect, which will only be compounded if they trade Hendrickson.

Kyren Lacy Apr 13 12:30pm CT
Kyren Lacy

Former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy passed away on Saturday night, according to NewOrleans.Football's Nick Underhill. A cause of death for the 24-year-old was not immediately known. He was accused of causing a crash that killed a 78-year-old man on Dec. 17 and then fleeing the scene without rendering aid or calling authorities. Lacy later turned himself in on Jan. 12, was jailed and later released on $151,000 bail. He was eventually charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run with death and reckless operation of a vehicle. Lacy declared for the NFL draft on Dec. 19, two days after the crash, and didn't play in LSU's win over Baylor in the Texas Bowl. He was ranked as high as No. 6 for the upcoming draft by ESPN analyst Mel Kiper back in December. Lacy caught 58 passes for 866 yards and a team-leading nine touchdowns in 2024.

Tetairoa McMillan Apr 13 12:20pm CT
Tetairoa McMillan

University of Arizona wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan, who is projected to be taken in the first round in this year's NFL draft, is making the rounds and has pre-draft visits scheduled with the New England Patriots, New Orleans Saints, Dallas Cowboys and Carolina Panthers, according to KPRC's Aaron Wilson. McMillan had 84 catches for 1,319 yards and eight touchdowns with the Wildcats last season and should make plenty of noise at the next level thanks to his 6-foot-4, 219-pound frame as a downfield threat. The 22-year-old was a consensus All-American and first-team All-Big 12 selection in 2024. In 2023, he had a career-high 90 receptions for 1,402 yards and 10 touchdowns. McMillan holds Arizona's all-time record with 3,423 receiving yards. Depending on where he ends up in the draft, McMillan could be a starting option in all fantasy lineups in Year 1 in the NFL.

Kyren Lacy

Dynasty | Former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy was found dead on Sunday morning. Dynasty Analysis: Lacy was reportedly found dead in Houston, Texas,. The former LSU receiver was accused of causing a crash that killed a 78-year-old man and then fleeing the scene last year. The grand jury was to being hearing evidence on the case tomorrow. This is obviously a very sad ending to the story and more details are clearly going to emerge. Lacy was a bit of a sleeper going into rookie drafts but this ends as yet another tragic tale in the world of football.

Cam Ward Apr 13 12:10pm CT
Cam Ward

The Athletic's Dianna Russini reports that all signs appear to be pointing to the Tennessee Titans taking University of Miami quarterback Cam Ward with the first overall pick in this year's NFL draft. Russini goes on to say that the only way the Titans part with the No. 1 pick is through a history trade package. The Titans canceled their private workout with Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders last week, which is further proof that they have their sights set on taking Ward as the first overall pick in a few weeks. Former second-rounder Will Levis flopped in his shot as the team's starting signal-caller in 2024 and led the league with 18 turnovers, leading to his benching. The 22-year-old will expected to come in immediately and start in Week 1 in 2025 after throwing for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions last year.

Courtland Sutton Apr 13 8:43am CT
Courtland Sutton

Denver Broncos WR Courtland Sutton said that he is 'optimistic' about how contract extension talks have gone this offseason. He is entering the final season of a four-year, $60.1 million deal and is slated to earn a base salary of $14 million in 2025.

Fantasy Spin: Unlike last offseason, Sutton is expected to take part in the Broncos' voluntary offseason program and organized team activities this year, even though an extension hasn't been finalized. He had 81 receptions and eclipsed the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the second time in his career in 2024, making him worthy of consideration as a WR2 option for fantasy leagues.

From TheHuddle

Kyler Murray Apr 12 11:20pm CT
Kyler Murray

ESPN's Josh Weinfuss thinks the Arizona Cardinals need to select a wide receiver in the first three rounds of the 2025 NFL draft. The Cardinals already have an unquestioned WR1 in Marvin Harrison Jr. and a No. 2 in Michael Wilson, but they could use another big three-down wideout to add to an offense that also includes tight end Trey McBride and running back James Conner. Opposing teams paid a lot of attention to Harrison last year, so it wouldn't be a surprise if they add to the receiver room to give quarterback Kyler Murray another option when Harrison is double-teamed. ESPN's Matt Miller was told that when Arizona is on the clock at No. 16 overall in the first round, they will likely go defense. They also have only six picks in this year's draft, so Miller wouldn't be surprised if the Cardinals trade back in Round 1 to accumulate more draft capital.

Dak Prescott Apr 12 11:00pm CT
Dak Prescott

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott (hamstring) said he is progressing in his recovery from a season-ending torn right hamstring last year that required surgery. "If I had to play a game today, I definitely could do that," Prescott said. "It's about moving forward healthy to make sure I can play 17 times, 20 [games] -- whatever we get to when the time's right." Prescott ended up playing in only eight games in 2024 after signing a four-year, $240 million contract extension last September that made him the highest-paid QB in NFL history in terms of annual average value. Before the injury, the 31-year-old had only 11 touchdowns and eight interceptions, making him a big disappointment in fantasy leagues as a QB1. However, the three-time Pro Bowler will be looking to bounce back in 2025 and is planning to take part in organized team activities when they start next month.

Kader Kohou Apr 12 11:00pm CT
Kader Kohou

As expected, Miami Dolphins cornerback Kader Kohou signed his $3.3 million tender offer on Saturday to return to the team for the 2025 season, according to the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson. The longer the Dolphins go this offseason without adding another cornerback, the better chance Kohou has of starting in the team's base defense in 2025 after a strong season in 2024. The 26-year-old defensive back finished last year, his third in the NFL, with 45 tackles (33 solo), a career-best two interceptions, eight pass breakups, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery in 15 games played (nine starts). Despite playing a career-low 671 defensive snaps in 2024, Kohou should be competing for a starting role in training camp this summer, depending on what the team does at the position in the upcoming NFL draft at the end of April.
