In Green Bay, NFL Draft wait almost over for Cam Ward, Travis Hunter

Field Level Media

Titletown underwent a makeover for the weekend as the 2025 NFL Draft takes place at historic Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wis., starting Thursday night with the first round.

On the clock since the final game of the regular season in January, the Tennessee Titans resisted trade overtures and are committed to keeping the No. 1 pick in hopes of reversing recent fortunes in Nashville.

Miami quarterback Cam Ward has been the primary prospect under consideration by first-year general manager Mike Borgonzi and second-year head coach Brian Callahan for weeks. Ward, rated as a zero-star recruit, began his journey at Incarnate Word, transferred to Washington State and then spent the final season of his five-year college football journey running the Hurricanes' offense and set the FBS record for TD passes (158).

"I'm excited to hopefully hear my name called first to go to a great organization like that," Ward said Wednesday.

The Titans' franchise last had the No. 1 pick in 1978, when the then-Oilers selected running back Earl Campbell.

Callahan was part of the Bengals' organization when Joe Burrow was drafted first overall in 2020 and Borgonzi was a scout with the Chiefs when Kansas City unearthed a franchise quarterback named Patrick Mahomes.

Ward dined with Titans brass before his pro day, where he declared he was "solidifying" his status as the No. 1 pick.

"I like confidence. I think that's a good thing," Callahan said. "When you're in the conversation for the No. 1 pick there's a lot that comes with it. To have fun with that is a good thing."

Ward said the passing game concepts in Tennessee are similar to what he was accustomed to in Miami. He also said he's been in touch with Warren Moon about wearing the retired number -- 1 -- Moon immortalized with the Houston Oilers' franchise.

Barring a trade, the Wisconsin faithful will wait a few hours into the draft for the Green Bay Packers to make their first selection, No. 23. The Packers enter the draft with picks late in the second (54) and third (87) rounds, which take place Friday night. The final four rounds begin Saturday morning.

One position seemingly always settled in Green Bay is quarterback, where Jordan Love has a firm hold on the spot since being drafted 26th in 2020 and developing behind Aaron Rodgers. The Packers have been the youngest team in the playoffs two consecutive seasons. Rodgers was the 24th pick in 2005.

Following the 2024 draft in which quarterbacks went 1-2-3 and six were first-round picks, the landing spots for the other QBs in this class are far less certain. Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Ole Miss' Jaxson Dart, Alabama's Jalen Milroe and Louisville's Tyler Shough all have been mentioned as options in the top 32.

None are expected to be selected before Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, the two-way dynamo from Colorado who insists he can continue playing two positions as a pro.

"I believe I can do it. They said I can't do it in college, I won the most prestigious award in college football. You still tell me what I can't do and I'm going to go out there and do it," Hunter said Wednesday, standing in the end zone at Lambeau Field. "Why is it important? Because I love football."

Hunter went to the NFL Scouting Combine as a defensive back -- primarily because players are grouped by position for all segments of the event -- and told teams in face-to-face interviews he sees himself as a wide receiver and cornerback.

Few debate his gamebreaker ability, but teams are far from unanimous on the best way to use Hunter.

Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty could be the first running back picked in the top five since Saquon Barkley (No. 2, Giants, 2018). Jeanty can break tackles and long runs, and shared his own self-confidence in an open letter to NFL general managers this month with a reminder: "It's tackle football, you know what I'm saying? I'd draft the guy they can't tackle."

Jeanty is the headliner in a deep running back class with the potential to place multiple players in the first round for the second time since 2019.

The supply of blue-chip defensive talent runs deep, starting with Penn State defensive end Abdul Carter. Depending on how Hunter is ultimately classified, Carter is expected to be the first defensive player off the board.

A converted stand-up linebacker with only one season at defensive end, Carter posted 23 sacks with the Nittany Lions but has been hampered by injuries to his shoulder and foot since the end of the extended 2024 college football season.

Carter said he's ready for draft day to finally be here.

"I'm ready to get to tomorrow and find out where I'm going to go," Carter said. "Wherever it is, I'm blessed to have the opportunity. I'm going to take advantage of the opportunity."

Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, Georgia edge defenders Jalon Walker and Mykel Williams and SEC offensive tackles who've blocked them -- Missouri's Armand Membou and Will Campbell of LSU -- are also leading options in the top 10.

The Patriots, who drafted Drake Maye behind Caleb Williams (Bears) and Jayden Daniels (Commanders) last year, are one of the teams eyeing betting pass protection under new head coach Mike Vrabel.

Pete Carroll is back in the saddle, too, after a year away and helping guide the Las Vegas Raiders at No. 6 with a fresh Jacksonville regime in between with the fifth overall pick. Jaguars' first-time general manager James Gladstone has taken an unconventional approach to the draft, and along with 39-year-old first-time head coach Liam Coen, brings an unpredictable element to the middle of the top 10.

A pair of Michigan All-Americans, defensive tackle Mason Graham and cornerback Will Johnson, are projected to be in play for the Jaguars and Raiders. Las Vegas scored a superstar in the first round last year with record-setter Brock Bowers, the 13th pick in 2024.

Michigan tight end Colston Loveland and Penn State's Tyler Warren are candidates to be picked in that same range this year.

When and where a second quarterback will come off the board is complicated.

Factors include talks with veterans in Pittsburgh, where the Steelers are considered the frontrunners to sign Rodgers in free agency. A similar scenario could unfold with the Cleveland Browns, who have the No. 2 pick, with reported interest in acquiring Falcons backup quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Cousins holds a no-trade clause and reportedly plans to resist waving that provision until after the draft to avoid landing in the same situation he found himself in a year ago. After signing a four-year, $180 million contract with Atlanta in free agency, the Falcons shocked Cousins and many more by using the No. 8 pick on Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr.

Kerby Joseph

The Detroit Lions have agreed with defensive back Kerby Joseph on a four-year, $86 million extension per Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team. Joseph's new contract ties him to Detroit through the 2029 season, making him the highest-paid safety in NFL history. The Illinois product led his team and the league last year with nine interceptions and placed third on the Lions with 83 total tackles. He's missed just two games in his three years with the organization, notching at least 74 takedowns and four INTs in each campaign. The 24-year-old played 99% of the team's defensive snaps in 2024 and will again be a pivotal asset in Detroit's defensive backfield.

Jahan Dotson Apr 23 4:13pm CT
Jahan Dotson

Dynasty | The Eagles have declined the fifth-year option on wide receiver Jahan Dotson. Dynasty Analysis: Dotson was acquired last season and really didn't do anything more for the Eagles than he did for the Commanders. He's quickly gone from a moderately exciting rookie prospect to a bit of a roster clogger. While he's on a lot of dynasty rosters at the moment, that may very well change as managers make room for new rookies in 2025. You can likely move along as there seems to be little to see here.

Michael Penix Jr. Apr 23 4:13pm CT
Michael Penix Jr.

Dynasty | The Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings are the most likely potential suitors for a Draft Day trade of Kirk Cousins. Dynasty Analysis: The Athletic's NFL insider Dianna Russini wrote that a weekend deal for Cousins would possibly happen Saturday, with Minnesota being the least likely of the three landing spots. Cousins' Dynasty value is almost entirely contingent on how many games he's able to start in 2025, so there's nowhere to go but up since the Falcons have made it clear they're intent on moving forward with Michael Penix Jr. from here on out. Cousins could give his potential new team a backstop for early-season starts if a prospective rookie is slow out of the gate (or J.J. McCarthy isn't ready by Week 1).

Chris Olave Apr 23 3:13pm CT
Chris Olave

Dynasty | The Saints have exercised the fifth-year option on wide receiver Chris Olave. Dynasty Analysis: This decision was a little tougher than advertised, thus the longer wait than anticipated. Olave has been nothing short of fantastic on the field, but his history of concussions, including two scary ones last season are casting a very large shadow over his career. If he can prove to be healthy in the long-term, dynasty managers have themselves a WR1. However, his ADP has starting to fall as there are real questions about his durability. At this point, he's a solid hold in dynasty leagues, though managers who have great concern could consider moving him after a few solid games next season.

C.J. Stroud Apr 23 3:00pm CT
C.J. Stroud

The Houston Texans are actively making calls in an attempt to move up in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic. General manager Nick Caserio has executed 18 total draft-day trades since taking the job in 2021, most notably trading up for Will Anderson after taking C.J. Stroud in the 2023 NFL Draft. Houston holds the No. 25 pick on Thursday and could get aggressive to add wide receiver or offensive line help on Day 1. While Houston won a playoff game last season, its offense took a step back in Year 2 under Stroud thanks to protection and injury concerns. With sights set on a Super Bowl run during Stroud's rookie deal, don't be surprised if Houston goes all in on a big-time prospect.

Sean Payton

The Denver Broncos have been rumored to be interested in Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty or North Carolina ball carrier Omarion Hampton, but the team is not expected to trade up in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic. "Denver is comfortable with sticking at pick No. 20 and selecting the player it wants or trading back," Russini wrote. "I heard the Broncos love some of the running backs, but not enough to move up." While Jeanty or Hampton would have tremendous fantasy football upside in Sean Payton's offense, the 2025 rookie running back class is strong and loaded with depth, so Denver could opt to pick one in Round 2 or 3 if Hampton is already off the board when their No. 20 overall selection rolls around.

Dak Prescott Apr 23 2:40pm CT
Dak Prescott

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic and her sources, the Dallas Cowboys are expected to target an offensive skill player with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Arizona wideout Tetairoa McMillan and Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden are two names that "could" interest Dallas, Russini wrote. The Cowboys are set at WR1 with All-Pro standout CeeDee Lamb, but the WR2 spot has been a weakness since Amari Cooper was traded to the Cleveland Browns following the 2021 campaign. While Dallas suddenly has holes at multiple offensive positions, the arrival of a talented first-round pass-catcher would provide a boost for quarterback Dak Prescott in fantasy football. Lamb has overall WR1 upside regardless of who Dallas potentially adds to the WR room. McMillan projects as a classic X-wide receiver with contested-catch ability, while Golden is a speedster with downfield pass-catching chops.

Jaxson Dart Apr 23 2:30pm CT
Jaxson Dart

The New Orleans Saints have a shaky quarterback position after the report of Derek Carr's shoulder injury and have been rumored to be interested in Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders or Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart with the No. 9 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, Dianna Russini reports that New Orleans is open to taking the best player available (likely on defense) and selecting a quarterback later in the draft. Potential candidates for that pick include one of the Georgia edge rushers, Jalon Walker or Mykel Williams. Many mock drafts around the industry have slotted a quarterback for the Saints with that selection, but it sounds like that is far from a certainty, and it might even be unlikely.

Tyler Warren Apr 23 2:20pm CT
Tyler Warren

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Los Angeles Rams tried to trade up for former Georgia tight end Brock Bowers during the 2024 NFL Draft, and the team could be looking to be aggressive in addressing the position on Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft. Penn State's Tyler Warren and Michigan's Colston Loveland are the consensus first-round tight end prospects in this year's class, so naturally, it is assumed the organization has their eye on one of the All-Big Ten performers. The 21-year-old Loveland caught 56 passes for 582 yards and five touchdowns last season in a run-heavy offense, while the 22-year-old Warren was a Heisman candidate after posting 1,451 yards of total offense and 12 scores. The Rams already replaced Cooper Kupp with Davante Adams this offseason, and adding a high-end tight end to replace Tyler Higbee could set quarterback Matthew Stafford up for one of the most productive seasons of his career.

Patrick Mahomes Apr 23 2:10pm CT
Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes hit the NFL by storm early in his career with his deep-passing skills and explosive plays. However, the Chiefs' offense ranked 27th in 20-plus-yard plays in 2024. Since Tyreek Hill departed to Miami and Travis Kelce has taken a step back, its offense has not connected on splash plays as often. Heading into next season, Mahomes is aiming to incorporate big plays back into the offense. "We've had a lot of turnover in the receiving room, and it seems like the core group will be back in its entirety." Mahomes said." So the goal is to try to build on it and get even better and try to get back to some of the explosive passing plays that we've done in years past." With all-world speedster Xavier Worthy heading into Year 2 and a potential full season of Marquise Brown, the ceiling is high for Kansas City's passing attack in 2025. Mahomes has not been a fantasy football game-changer over the last two seasons, but a more dangerous offensive attack could put him back in the high-end QB1 range.

Chris Olave Apr 23 1:00pm CT
Chris Olave

ESPN's Katherine Terrell reports that the New Orleans Saints are picking up wide receiver Chris Olave's fifth-year option on Wednesday. Despite playing in a career-low eight games in 2024 in his third year in the NFL due to multiple concussions, the Saints picking up the former first-rounder's fifth-year option was a no-brainer. The 24-year-old Ohio State alumni is scheduled to make $16.8 million guaranteed on his fifth-year option in 2026. Olave cleared 1,000 yards receiving in each of his first two NFL seasons on 159 total receptions and nine touchdowns, so he has proven he has the chops to operate as a WR1 for fantasy managers when he's healthy. However, his head injuries from last year could scare many fantasy managers off this fall, as well as New Orleans' quarterback situation with Derek Carr possibly needing shoulder surgery.

TreVeyon Henderson Apr 23 12:40pm CT
TreVeyon Henderson

The Kansas City Chiefs conducted a virtual call with Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson on Tuesday, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. Head coach Andy Reid was part of the call. Henderson has been rising up mock-draft boards with the start of the draft now just a day away, and the Chiefs could be looking for more explosiveness to their backfield. The 22-year-old could very easily come off the board in this year's draft in the first round, and the Chiefs hold the No. 31 overall pick. They brought back Kareem Hunt in the offseason behind starter Isaiah McKenzie and also signed Elijah Mitchell for more RB depth, but Henderson would surely give KC more explosiveness to their backfield and would likely be considered an immediate upgrade over the aging Hunt and injury-prone Mitchell. In addition to averaging 7.0 yards per attempt in 2024, Henderson caught 77 passes in his collegiate career.

Derek Carr Apr 23 12:40pm CT
Derek Carr

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis acknowledged that quarterback Derek Carr (shoulder) is dealing with a shoulder injury that could require surgery and that the organization hopes to have some clarity on the situation soon. There are a lot of question marks about Carr's future with the Saints, and it was recently reported that the 34-year-old signal-caller could be in danger of missing the start of the 2025 campaign. It has led many to believe that New Orleans will target a young QB in this week's draft, possibly even with the No. 9 overall pick in the first round on Thursday night. Outside of Carr, the Saints currently have Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener and Ben DiNucci in their quarterback room. Even if Carr avoids shoulder surgery, stays with the Saints and is their Week 1 starter this fall, he'll be ignored in most 12-team fantasy drafts.

Micah Parsons Apr 23 12:30pm CT
Micah Parsons

Dallas Cowboys All-Pro pass-rusher Micah Parsons said that he's taking part in the team's voluntary offseason program to build his relationship with new head coach Brian Schottenheimer and to grow as a leader, but he also indicated that he might not do all of the on-field work as the offseason progresses. As he heads into the final year of his current deal, the 25-year-old linebacker is still looking for a new long-term extension, and it doesn't appear like the two sides are at all close to a resolution after owner Jerry Jones bypassed Parsons' agent in contract talks at the beginning of April. If the two sides are still at a contract impasse by the summer when training camp is about to start, it's very possible that we'll be talking about a potential hold-in for the four-time Pro Bowler. Contract issues aside, Parsons is a fantasy stud in IDP formats with 52.5 sacks in his four NFL seasons.

Jalen Ramsey Apr 23 12:30pm CT
Jalen Ramsey

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay didn't rule out the possibility of the team trading for Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey. "You would certainly never rule out the possibility of that... There's a lot of layers that would need to be worked out with a player of his magnitude... but you would never eliminate the possibility of adding a total stud," McVay said. The 30-year-old former first-rounder (fifth overall) by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2016 out of Florida State played for the Rams from 2019-22. He spent the last two seasons in Miami, but it sounds like his time in South Beach is coming to an end. The seven-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro played in all 17 games in 2024 and had 60 tackles (39 solo), six tackles for loss, two interceptions and 11 pass breakups while playing at a high level. There will be plenty of suitors for Ramsey, who could be dealt during this week's NFL draft.

Anthony Richardson Apr 23 12:20pm CT
Anthony Richardson

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, who is locked in a position battle with Daniel Jones for the starting QB job this offseason, said he worked extensively on "footwork" and "being able to just stay calm in the pocket." The former fourth overall pick in 2023 was benched in favor of veteran Joe Flacco in 2024 and has missed considerable time due to injuries in his first two years in the league. The 22-year-old signal-caller has elite rushing ability, but he has posted just a 50.6% career completion rate, which is why the Colts brought in Jones this offseason to push the physically-gifted athlete. The Colts have said they've received encouraging reports on Richardson's progress this offseason, but the proof will be in the pudding of whether he can beat out Jones and stay healthy. In a best-case scenario, Richardson will win the starting gig and be an upside QB2 target in fantasy due to his rushing ability.

Kirk Cousins Apr 23 12:10pm CT
Kirk Cousins

The Atlanta Falcons are bound to be having many trade conversations during this week's NFL draft that involve quarterback Kirk Cousins, and The Athletic's Dianna Russini points out the Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings as the most likely suitors for Cousins, who signed a four-year deal with Atlanta in free agency last year, only to play 14 games before being benched by rookie Michael Penix Jr. The Vikings, where Cousins played for six seasons, is the least likely of the trio to trade for Cousins, who must approve any trade. Russini writes that he's not eager to go to a team with a promising young QB like J.J. McCarthy. If the veteran signal-caller is traded during this week's draft, it would likely happen on Saturday. The Falcons have made it clear that they're moving forward with Penix as their starter, and Cousins has told the team that he would rather play elsewhere as a starter than back up Penix again.

Kayshon Boutte Apr 23 12:10pm CT
Kayshon Boutte

With new head coach Mike Vrabel at the helm, the New England Patriots are open to trading players from the previous coaching staff, sources tell FOX Sports' Jordan Schultz, and one name to watch is wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. The former LSU wideout will turn 23 in May and had 43 catches for 589 yards and three touchdowns on 68 targets over 15 games (13 starts) in his second year in the NFL. The Patriots selected the 22-year-old pass-catcher in the sixth round (187th overall) in the 2023 NFL draft. Boutte only had two catches on seven targets for 19 yards in his rookie campaign in five games played in New England, and although receiver is a position of need for the organization despite the fact that added Stefon Diggs this offseason, it sounds like Boutte is expendable. Even if Boutte isn't traded, expect the Patriots to address their receiver depth in this week's NFL draft.

Michael Pittman Jr. Apr 22 11:30pm CT
Michael Pittman Jr.

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. (back) said that his back injury from the 2024 season is in the past and he didn't require surgery on his back. He said he was cleared to play last month and thinks he's done the work necessary to get past the fractured back that he played through last year. In addition to shaky quarterback play and Anthony Richardson eventually being benched in favor of veteran Joe Flacco, Pittman battled a busted back to finish with only 69 receptions, 808 receiving yards and three touchdowns in 16 games, which were all the lowest marks of his five-year NFL career since his rookie campaign in 2020 in which he played in only 13 games. The 27-year-old might be better off from a fantasy perspective if Daniel Jones wins the quarterback competition over Anthony Richardson this offseason, but either way, fantasy managers are going to be more skeptical of Pittman as a WR2 in 2025.

George Pickens Apr 22 11:00pm CT
George Pickens

ESPN's Brooke Pryor writes that Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Omar Khan shut down speculation that the team could trade wide receiver George Pickens, who is eligible for a contract extension this summer, to add a second-rounder in this week's NFL draft. "We're glad we have George and DK here," Khan said. "I think they're going to be exciting for everyone to watch." The Steelers have six picks in this week's draft, but they are without a second-rounder after using the No. 52 overall pick as part of the trade to land receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks. The 24-year-old Pickens fell short of 1,000 yards -- he had 900 yards and three touchdowns on 59 receptions -- and could be more volatile of a fantasy asset in 2025 with Metcalf now in the picture. That's especially true with Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson as the only quarterbacks currently on their roster.
