Browns not considering QB change despite Joe Flacco’s struggles

Field Level Media

The Cleveland Browns are 0-2 and have scored just 33 total points so far, but coach Kevin Stefanski claimed that the team isn't considering a change at quarterback.

Joe Flacco started the first two games of the season and has not been effective. Late in Sunday's 41-17 road blowout at the hands of the Baltimore Ravens, he was replaced by rookie Dillon Gabriel, who led a touchdown drive.

Asked if the Browns will think about a permanent change, Stefanski answered in the negative.

"I don't think we did good enough. I think that collectively as a team, we as an offense, we as the coaching staff, all of us didn't do a good enough job," Stefanski said.

Flacco, 40, finished the day 25-for-45 passing for 199 yards -- just 4.4 yards per attempt -- with one touchdown and one interception. He also lost a fumble. He had 290 passing yards and a touchdown in a Week 1 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals but was picked off twice.

Gabriel, 24, made his NFL debut in the fourth quarter and completed all three of his passes for 19 yards, the last one an 8-yard touchdown to Dylan Sampson.

Gabriel is the second-string quarterback on Cleveland's depth chart, and Shedeur Sanders is the third-stringer. Both were taken in the middle rounds of the NFL draft this past April.

Flacco, who was given the starting job in camp at the outset of his 18th NFL season, said he can't worry about his job security.

"It's honestly not on my mind," Flacco said. "I got to go out there and just play my game, play the way I know how to. Lead this team the best I can. All that other stuff, it is out of my control. It is what it is. I mean, the only thing I can control is how I play and how this team shows up every day. So, it really isn't in the thought process."

Starts, Sits, Sleepers: Week 2

Player Notes
Troy Franklin Sep 14 9:40pm ET
Troy Franklin

Denver Broncos wide receiver Troy Franklin had the best game of his career in Week 2, recording eight catches for 89 yards and a touchdown in his team's 29-28 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Franklin was targeted nine times in a game where no other Denver receiver logged more than four targets. The second-year wideout has now recorded 12 catches on 15 targets for 133 yards and a touchdown this season. Franklin could be emerging as the number two wide receiver in Denver behind Courtland Sutton. The 22-year-old will be a name to monitor on the waiver wire for fantasy managers heading into a Week 3 matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Daniel Jones Sep 14 9:30pm ET
Daniel Jones

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones posted his second straight stellar performance in his team's 29-28 Week 2 victory over the Denver Broncos. Jones completed 23 of 34 passes for 316 yards and one touchdown, adding another touchdown as a rusher as well. Jones has now thrown for 588 yards with two touchdowns and zero interceptions across the first two games of the season. He's rushed for three scores as well. The 28-year-old is in his first year in Indianapolis after six underwhelming seasons with the New York Giants. Jones has been far better than expectations so far with the Colts, and may deserve consideration as a waiver-wire pickup in fantasy. He'll play his first road game of the season in Week 3 against the Tennessee Titans.

From RotoBaller

Justin Fields Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Justin Fields

Dynasty | Jets tight end Mason Taylor had one catch for five yards in a loss to the Bills. Dynasty Analysis: Taylor now has just two catches for 25 yards through two games. While a lot of the blame can be placed squarely on Justin Fields, Taylor just hasn't been much of a difference maker early on. He remains a good dynasty hold but the excitement surrounding him is starting to wane quickly.

Sam Darnold Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Sam Darnold

Dynasty | 49ers quarterback Mac Jones completed 26-of-39 passes for 279 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a win against New Orleans. Dynasty Analysis: You have to take some of this with a grain of salt as New Orleans isn't exactly reminding anyone of the 1985 Bears but this was solid nonetheless. It's honestly starting like you can put just about anyone in this offense and find success, a true credit to Kyle Shanahan. Regardless, Jones was about as good as you could hope filling in for Brock Purdy. While he still remains pretty far off the long-term dynasty radar, perhaps he can do this a few more times and attempt to follow a Sam Darnold-like path back to relevance.

Spencer Rattler Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Spencer Rattler

Dynasty | Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler completed 25-of-34 passes for 207 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in a loss to the 49ers. Dynasty Analysis: The stat line is about as good as you can get when your yards per attempt is close to six. Rattler needs to play with the training wheels off at some point for everyone to see if he really has what it takes to succeed in the NFL and be more than a game manager. Still, this was good enough again to keep Tyler Shough way off the radar. Rattler is a good roster stash but hardly worth considering in a 1QB league.

Drake Maye Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Drake Maye

Dynasty | Patriots quarterback Drake Maye completed 19-of-23 passes for 230 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in a win against Miami. Dynasty Analysis: Maye now has over 500 passing yards with three touchdowns and just one interception through the first two weeks of the season. While he doesn't exactly have the most talented roster around him, Maye has looked really good at the start of the season. He doesn't have much so far on the ground and that caps his ceiling but you could do a lot worse for your QB2 at the moment. His dynasty arrow is pointing up.

TreVeyon Henderson Sep 14 9:13pm ET
TreVeyon Henderson

Dynasty | Patriots rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson had ten rushing yards, two catches and 30 receiving yards in a win against Miami. Dynasty Analysis: Henderson had just just five touches on the day while Rhamondre Stevenson had 16 and Antonio Gibson had six. It's a disappointing turn of events for the uber-talented rookie who seemed to have an inside track to a prominent role early on. Unfortunately, it seems New England is more than content using Rhamondre Stevenson on primary down and Henderson simply as a change of pace option at the moment. He needs to be on fantasy benches until something changes and his rookie ranking may start to slip here soon.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Davante Adams Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Davante Adams

Dynasty | Rams wide receiver Davante Adams had six catches for 106 yards and a touchdown in a win against Tennessee. Dynasty Analysis: Adams now has 21 targets in two games, creating a clear co-WR1 situation in Los Angeles. Even better, he had six goal line targets today alone. While Puka Nacua remains the more explosive option for the Rams, Adams has shown he may just have one more elite fantasy season left in him. He remains a solid target for contending teams as an aging receiver who has found himself in a great situation.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Cam Ward Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Cam Ward

Dynasty | Titans quarterback Cam Ward completed 19-of-33 passes for 175 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions in a loss to the Rams. Dynasty Analysis: Ward was closer to 60% on his completion rate and that's much better than last week's 42.9% clunker. There are growing pains in the NFL but he made a pretty amazing touchdown pass and has yet to turn the ball over through the air. He needs to make more strides before being anywhere close to fantasy lineups but Ward looked better today.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Caleb Williams Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Caleb Williams

Dynasty | Bears quarterback Caleb Williams completed 19-of-30 passes for 207 yards with two touchdowns and one interception in a blowout loss to the Lions. Dynasty Analysis: He added 27 yards on the ground. The Bears defense hasn't helped him much, allowing 73 points the past five quarters. Rome Odunze broke through today and that should be a boost but Williams just hasn't quite lived up to the hype through two games. It's early in the season and no time to panic but we're going to need to see more soon before anointing him as the next big thing.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Rome Odunze Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Rome Odunze

Dynasty | Bears wide receiver Rome Odunze had seven catches for 128 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to Detroit. Dynasty Analysis: Bears fans have to be disappointed in the beginning of their season but Odunze has been a real bright spot, breaking through today with a monster game. Even DJ Moore has taken a back seat to Odunze, who looks like the top option in the passing game at this point. With 20 targets through two games, Odunze clearly looks like a weekly must-start in fantasy leagues moving forward and his dynasty value is skyrocketing.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Jared Goff Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Jared Goff

Dynasty | Lions quarterback Jared Goff completed 23-of-28 passes for 334 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions in a win against the Bears. Dynasty Analysis: Well, it seems the loss of Ben Johnson may not have been that big after all. Goff lead the Lions to a convincing 52-21 win over their former offensive coordinator and the game wasn't even that close. Goff will never beat teams with his legs but he always has the ability to put up gaudy days like this one. He'll be a low-end QB1 moving forward.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Justin Jefferson Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Justin Jefferson

Dynasty | Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St, Brown had nine catches for 115 yards and three touchdowns in a blowout win over Chicago. Dynasty Analysis: And that should make him this week's fantasy MVP. Two late touchdowns iced the game for the Lions and turned what was a good day into an epic one in terms of fantasy points. Justin Jefferson and Ja'Marr Chase continue to get most of the attention but St. Brown is making a push to be the overall WR1 and possibly overall 1.01 in dynasty leagues.

Jaxson Dart Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Jaxson Dart

Dynasty | Giants quarterback Russell Wilson completed 30-of-41 passes for 450 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in a heartbreaking loss to Dallas. Dynasty Analysis: The Giants let Russ cook and he nearly burned down the restaurant as he set a new career high in passing yards. His late interception was a killer but it's hard to blame him for this loss. Jaxson Dart did play a bit today but it seems that was because a pre-planned package was set for him. Wilson is still on a short leash but it would be stunning to see him benched after this one.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Russell Wilson Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Russell Wilson

Dynasty | Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers had nine catches for 167 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Cowboys. Dynasty Analysis: The Cowboys came back and won this game but don't blame Nabers, who just owned the Dallas secondary all day. Russell Wilson had a career day and showed off his amazing deep ball accuracy - a perfect recipe to produce a monster game for Nabers. It really won't matter who plays quarterback for the G-Men at any point moving forward as Nabers has proven he's both quarterback and matchup-proof as a WR1.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Tyrone Tracy Jr. Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Tyrone Tracy Jr.

Dynasty | Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo had 45 rushing yards, two catches, 14 receiving yards and a touchdown in a loss to Dallas. Dynasty Analysis: Most importantly, Skattebo had 13 touches, Tyrone Tracy had nine and Devin Singletary had just two. In other words, Skattebo is looking like your new RB1 in New York. It's a bit of a surprise considering Tracy has been productive but Skattebo does provide a power the others just don't have. Skattebo is going to be a sketchy start moving forward but his arrow is pointing up.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Jaydon Blue Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Jaydon Blue

Dynasty | Cowboys running back Javonte Williams had 97 rushing yards, six catches, 33 receiving yards and a touchdown in a win against the Giants. Dynasty Analysis: We all wondered if anyone would actually take over as the top back in Dallas this year and it seems that question has been answered. Williams is dominating backfield touches on a good offense and has a legitimate chance to win Fantasy Comeback Player of the Year should this continue. At this point, he should be in lineups considering he's scored three touchdowns in just two weeks and has effectively neutralized the values of both Miles Sanders and Jaydon Blue in the process.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Russell Wilson Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Russell Wilson

Dynasty | Giants wide receiver Wan'Dale Robinson had eight catches for 142 yards and a touchdown in a loss to the Cowboys. Dynasty Analysis: Much of the attention is going to be focused on Russell Wilson and Malik Nabers but Robinson was also very good in this one. It's been a steady rise for Robinson over the past two years and it looks like this may just be the year he breaks through. He needs to be on benches for one more week but another solid game will likely change all of that.

From Dynasty League Fantasy

Tetairoa McMillan Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Tetairoa McMillan

Dynasty | Panthers rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan had six catches for 100 yards in a loss to the Cardinals. Dynasty Analysis: McMillan has been as advertised through the first two weeks and while the Panthers have failed to meet expectations, it's hard to blame him much. His ceiling may be capped by the team he plays on but it's clear early on he's a player with a high floor and high ceiling - perfect for dynasty managers who took a shot on him early on with a rookie pick. His ADP has settled in and he's one of the more coveted receivers in dynasty leagues at the moment.

Troy Franklin Sep 14 9:13pm ET
Troy Franklin

Dynasty | Broncos wide receiver Troy Franklin had eight catches for 89 yards and a touchdown in a heartbreaking loss to the Colts. Dynasty Analysis: There was a lot of talk this off-season about Franklin making a second-year leap and if today was any indication, we may just see it. He led the team in targets and simply looks like a young player who has things figured out. At this point, he's in the top 20 in terms of fantasy scoring for receivers on the season and while that may not last, the buying window on him has squarely closed.
