The Los Angeles Lakers will be without star big man Anthony Davis for at least a week due to an abdominal strain.
The injury occurred during the first quarter of Tuesday's 118-104 road loss to the Philadelphia 76ers.
"Davis will return to Los Angeles today and be re-evaluated in approximately one week," the team said Wednesday.
Davis had four points with two rebounds in 10 minutes before departing with 2:10 left in the opening quarter.
Playing on the second night of a back-to-back, Davis was coming off a 42-point, 23-rebound performance Monday in a road victory over the Charlotte Hornets. It was the fifth 40-20 game of his career.
The 31-year-old has missed three of the Lakers' 45 games this season. Los Angeles was 2-1 in those games.
The time off means Davis will miss road games against the Washington Wizards (Thursday) and the New York Knicks (Saturday). Los Angeles faces the cross-town Clippers next Tuesday.
Playing in his 13th NBA season, Davis is averaging a team-leading 25.7 points and 11.9 rebounds per game. The nine-time All-Star has averaged 24.2 points with 10.7 rebounds over 778 career games (771 starts) for the New Orleans Hornets/Pelicans (2012-19) and the Lakers.
Toronto Raptors forward/center Kelly Olynyk (calf) is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Washington Wizards. He has missed a pair of games with right calf tightness. With Olynyk sidelined, Orlando Robinson has stepped into the backup center role. Chris Boucher is also in a position to benefit. He had one of his best games of the season with Olynyk out on Saturday against the Atlanta Hawks, scoring 23 points. Ahead of Wednesday's matchup, Boucher has finished with double-digit points in three consecutive games while averaging 3.7 rebounds over that span.
Toronto Raptors guard Immanuel Quickley (hip) will remain out on Wednesday against the Washington Wizards, missing an eighth consecutive game. He continues to recover from a left hip strain. Davion Mitchell will continue to start in Quickley's place. The 26-year-old has not delivered consistent fantasy value, averaging 7.9 points and 5.6 assists in a starting role this season. Jamal Shead will continue to provide backup at the point guard position until Quickley returns. His next chance for a comeback will be on Friday against the Chicago Bulls.
Cleveland Cavaliers forward Dean Wade (knee) will be re-evaluated in approximately two weeks, the team announced. He will be out for a third consecutive game as the Cavaliers visit Miami on Wednesday. Wade was hurt in a game against the Philadelphia 76ers last week and has been diagnosed with a right knee bone bruise. Max Strus has cemented his place in the starting lineup during Wade's absence. Although he hasn't been quite like his usual self after missing a significant portion of the season due to an ankle injury, Strus will head into Wednesday's action following back-to-back strong performances.
Cleveland Cavaliers guard/forward Caris LeVert (wrist) will not be available for Wednesday's contest against the Miami Heat. He is struggling to recover from a wrist sprain and will be out for a sixth consecutive game. Sam Merrill and Ty Jerome get a chance to log extra minutes off the bench with LeVert on the shelf. Jerome has been a strong stretch lately, averaging 16.0 points with 48.1 percent three-point shooting in the five games LeVert has missed. Merrill struggles with his shooting, having hit only 32.7 percent of his field-goal attempts this month, and has not made the same impact.
Boston Celtics forward Sam Hauser (hip) has been listed as questionable on the injury report ahead of Wednesday's game against the Chicago Bulls. He may have to sit out a second consecutive contest due to right hip impingement. Payton Pritchard will have a bigger role to play off the bench if Hauser remains out. He had his third outing of the month with 30-plus minutes on Monday versus the Houston Rockets, going 5-for-6 from downtown and finishing with 15 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Chicago gives up the third-most three-point attempts in the league, making this a juicy matchup for Pritchard.
Boston Celtics forward/center Al Horford (toe) is questionable for Wednesday's matchup against the Chicago Bulls. The veteran big man is battling a toe sprain. Horford was cleared for action on Monday against the Houston Rockets but was a late scratch. This gave Luke Kornet a starting opportunity, and he had a busy night with 18 points, seven rebounds, one block, and one steal. The same could happen against the Bulls' horrible defense. However, Boston will have Derrick White (shin) back in the lineup on Wednesday, so Kornet might not start this time.
Philadelphia's G Tyrese Maxey scored 43 points on 15-of-26 shooting in a 118-104 win over the Lakers on Tuesday, Jan. 28.
Los Angeles Lakers center Anthony Davis (abdomen) won't return to Tuesday's game against the 76ers. AD suffered an abdomen strain, ending his night after only 10 minutes of work. He'll likely need to undergo further testing. However, it's certainly possible that he misses Thursday's matchup with the Washington Wizards, at least. In the meantime, Jarred Vanderbilt, who didn't play on Tuesday, could take Davis' spot in the rotation, although Christian Koloko and Jaxson Hayes should also be in line for more minutes.
New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray (elbow, finger) is listed as probable ahead of Wednesday's game against the Dallas Mavericks. Murray is dealing with a couple of lingering injuries, but they aren't expected to keep him off the court. He finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists on Monday, so it doesn't appear to be impacting his performance on the court. However, Murray did miss a game last week, so fantasy managers will need to check back closer to tip-off. Jordan Hawkins and Trey Murphy III would see increased roles and more fantasy appeal if Murray is unable to play.
Portland Trail Blazers center Deandre Ayton (knee) has been upgraded to available ahead of Tuesday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks. Ayton is back in the mix following a three-game absence due to left knee soreness. There is no word on Ayton being limited, so the expectation is that he'll have his normal workload on Tuesday. His return to the court should shift Donovan Clingan back to the bench. Clingan should see reduced playing time which will make him a less appealing fantasy option. Fantasy managers should go ahead and get Ayton active in their lineups ahead of Tuesday's tip-off.
Los Angeles Lakers center Anthony Davis (abdomen) is questionable to return on Tuesday against Philadelphia. AD was probable heading into this contest because of a nagging foot issue. However, he may miss the remainder of Tuesday's game because of an abdomen injury. If Davis doesn't return, he'll finish with four points, two boards, and one steal in 10 minutes of action, with Jaxson Hayes and Christian Koloko in line to see more work.
Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry (knee) has been downgraded to out ahead of Tuesday's game against the Utah Jazz. Curry was a late addition to the injury report and now will officially sit out due to lingering knee issues. This seems like a rest type of game more than anything considering it's the front end of a back-to-back. Nonetheless, Dennis Schroder should be asked to move into the starting five with Curry unavailable. Schroder hasn't been much of a fantasy option lately, but is worth a look given he'll see significant minutes on Wednesday. The last time Schroder played over 30 minutes he finished with 20 points and four assists. For now, fantasy managers should consider Curry as day-to-day and questionable for Wednesday's contest.
Phoenix Suns forward Ryan Dunn (ankle) is listed as questionable ahead of Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Dunn recently suffered a left ankle sprain that could keep him sidelined for a second straight contest. The good news is, Dunn is considered as day-to-day, so he's not expected to miss an extended period of time. Royce O'Neale figures to see a larger role in the rotation if Dunn is unable to play on Wednesday. Lately, O'Neale hasn't been a great fantasy option, but he'll likely see minutes in the mid-20s with the Suns banged up right now. That being said, O'Neale could be worth a look as a low-end streaming option for Wednesday's slate.
Boston Celtics guard Derrick White (shin) is no longer listed on the injury report heading toward Wednesday's game against Chicago. The 30-year-old almost missed Saturday's win over Dallas because of an elbow issue. However, he didn't play on Monday versus Houston because of a shin contusion. With Jayson Tatum (knee), Sam Hauser (hip), and Al Horford (toe) all questionable for Wednesday's contest, White may need to step up on the offensive end, giving him a higher ceiling for fantasy managers. But even if Tatum is available, White remains a must-start in any fantasy format.
New York Knicks forward Josh Hart (knee) is questionable for Wednesday's game against the Nuggets. He appeared on the injury report because of a sore knee heading into the Knicks' previous two games. However, the 29-year-old had 20 points, 18 rebounds, 11 assists, and two blocks versus the Kings on Saturday. Although he wasn't as productive in Monday's win over Memphis, he still finished with four points, 10 boards, and five assists. Fantasy managers should expect to see him out there on Wednesday. But if Hart can't play, Precious Achiuwa and Miles McBride may see more action.
Oklahoma City Thunder guard Luguentz Dort (knee) has been removed from the injury report ahead of Wednesday's game against the Golden State Warriors. Dort is set to return to the court after missing Sunday's contest due to a right knee issue. It was only a one game absence, so fantasy managers should expect Dort to have his regular workload on Wednesday. He hasn't been the most consistent fantasy option this season, but fantasy managers who have him rostered can safely get him back in their lineups on Wednesday. Aaron Wiggins will head back to the bench where he won't have as much streaming appeal.
Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams (foot, injury management) won't play on Wednesday against the Nets. The 23-year-old has averaged a career-high 15.5 points with 9.4 boards and 1.2 blocks this season. But in an attempt to keep him healthy, he'll get the night off on Wednesday before likely returning on Friday versus the Los Angeles Clippers. Without Williams in the equation, Taj Gibson will likely get the start. However, Moussa Diabate will likely be more productive and receive more minutes.
Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant (thumb) is listed as questionable ahead of Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The superstar forward appears to have suffered a left thumb injury during Monday's contest. The Suns are likely going to wait and see how Durant feels closer to tip-off before making a final decision on his status. If he sits, Royce O'Neale and Grayson Allen would be in line for larger roles. Neither player is a great source of fantasy production right now, but Allen is the better choice between the two due to his scoring ability.
Brooklyn Nets guard Ben Simmons (back) isn't listed on the injury report heading into Wednesday's matchup with the Hornets. The former 76er missed the last five games. But it's good news for Brooklyn, who will be without Noah Clowney (ankle), Cam Thomas (hamstring), and Cameron Johnson (ankle). With that in mind, Simmons, who has averaged only 6.3 points this season, could get more scoring chances against one of the worst teams in the National Basketball Association. Under normal circumstances, Simmons' return could mean D'Angelo Russell would head back to the bench. But with so many injuries on the roster, both players may start.
Brooklyn Nets forward Cameron Johnson (ankle) won't play on Wednesday against Charlotte. The former Sun missed just two of Brooklyn's 34 games to begin the 2024-25 campaign. However, he's played only three times in the Nets' previous 13 contests. As expected, Johnson is being mentioned in trade rumors, so it's anyone's guess if he'll ever suit up for the team ever again. With that said, Noah Clowney (ankle) isn't available, meaning Jalen Wilson, Ziaire Williams, and Tosan Evbuomwan could be spending plenty of time at the three and four spots. All three players have value for fantasy managers, especially with a favorable matchup with the Hornets on tap. Still, none of them have been consistent from a production standpoint.
